    First VAG-Com, A Few Errors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I just recieved my VAG-Com tool today. Love it, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. lol
Ran my first scan. I can sorta make sense of it. Been doing some reading, but I'm throwing a few codes. Don't know if they're old codes. I just picked up the car about 2 months ago, so I suppose they could've been lingering. Should I just clear them and see if they come back?

where can I get the vag com cable from? I knwo you can get it from ross-tech but they don't sell the cable. it looks like I have to buyt the VCDS License
with HEX-COM+CAN Interface for $350? Im not sure if its worth buying that to remove air bag light? I need some advice, If anyone knows where I can get a cheaper cable that would be great. FYI i already bought a cable from amazon and did not work, spen $40 on it.

Please, for the love of god, search and don't thread jack. You can get the cable from ross-tech, which comes with a full licensed version of VCDS, all for $250. Have you even explored/read the ross-tech site? They have an easy to read chart which shows what cable is compatible with each car. And because it is beautiful out and I'm in a good mood, the cable you want is the KII-USB.

Clear all the codes and scan again. What I've done, which greatly speeds up the process, is to setup a custom scan definition that only scans the modules that I have and doesn't waste 5+ minutes scanning crap I don't and never will have. What you can do is just write down the module numbers from your scan output and add a line to the autoscan.txt file (I think thats what its called). I named mine "Silver USP" and made another one for my b7 avant. It makes the scanning MUCH faster.

When you do your second scan you'll get the persistenterror codes. Check Ross-Techs wiki/DTC Code database or just google the PXXXXX code and you're bound to find something. If you can try to suss out those errors. Then VAG the car again after a week or so to get any intermittent errors.

When I first got mine I Vag'ed my car almost every day. I've gotten over that at least now

Play around with the logging too to get a sense for what you can do with it.boost logging (actual vs. requested boost) can be helpful in diagnosing any boost leaks as well. Good luck.

Yeah, I haven't gotten a chance to really play around with it. I wish there was a kind of how-to or sticky on VAG for the B6. there's not one that I've been able to find.

No check engine light. Must mean that they're old codes that didn't get erased. Readiness... lol :) Although, I did (the other day) try to start the car without one of the engine timing fuses. That didn't go well. lol showed a CEL for a couple days, but everything is fine again.

I love all these smart remarks here on AZ... of course I downloaded the manual. C'mon, man...
Maybe you missed the part where I said for the B6
...and ross-tech does have a small blurb on the B6 specifically but it's missing a few of the smaller, less notable details. Ross-Tech openly rely's on communication through/in forums to get the full potential out of VCDS. It even says so on their website.
