I use Royal Purple 0w-30. Been running it for a while, performace gains are going to be slight if any, no matter what oil you use. Any high end synthetic, will have great lasting effects on your engine. It comes down to whatever you prefer. Royal Purple is about $12 a quart if that helps any

Whether the oils are still true Grp.IV synth's or hydrocracked Grp.III's, so long as you run UOAs and make sure the lubricant is holding up in your engine, it should fine.

But, if you want to pay less for great lubrication with higher shear limits, HDEOs like Rotella, I think, are undeniably the way to go.

RP has been proven to break down very fast in our engines, there are some blackstone reports floating around here to support that I think. Might be good for some applications, just not the 2.7t or 1.8t.

I dont have any information regarding AMSOil, but I have not heard any bad things and some people run it with good results I believe.

Motul, TotalQuartz, Pentosin, Lubro Moly, Elf, etc. are all going to be great choices since they are all formulated to be compatible with our engines albeit more expensive and most of them have to be ordered unless your local parts store stocks it.

Myself, I run Rotella T6 5w-40w. I dont really know why someone would want to run anything lower weight than that even in the winter but I have heard and read of people running 0w-30w of certain oils not sure why though.

I like the Shell because its easily obtainable, reasonably priced, and doesnt piss out of every seal is getting old on my engine when cold. Mobil 1 did this and I was putting a qt in every 1k miles, switched to shell and I dont have to put but 1qt/10k miles. The Rotella also quieted the valvetrain noise that was present when I bought my car (car came with M1).

The Shell seems like a good product, WalMart usually has it for ~$20/gal and parts stores will be about ~$7 higher-at least out here on the west coast. I am running the Rotella in my S and my mom-in-laws Allroad and my wife's A4. No problems.

Mobil 1 is a very good synthetic oil. Amsoil actually gets their oil from Mobil 1, so in reality it is actually the same as Mobil 1. The only thing different with Amsoil is the additives they put in to help it last longer and clean the engine.

I think its pretty safe to use the manufacturers recommended brand/weight. The engine was designed using that oil and you can never go wrong using with that. Now what is audi's recommended oil for your car? Id look in your owners manual or ask the dealer.

there is no Audi approved Amsoil oil, and thats why I wont use it.

Mobil 1 meets all specs and is most easily accessible. Why get all creative with oil selection when Audi tells you what to use?

Because Mobil 1 shears to a 30 weight in like 1k miles? If you like running a thinner oil, go for it. I use 5w40 and I want it to stay at that viscosity for more than a month's worth of driving.

Nonsense. Amsoil has been making synthetic oil long before there was a Mobil 1. Who were they buying it from then genius?

I've used all the oils listed above. Imo i like Amsoil the best. I use the european formula. And the engine itself is definitely quieter. I also run it in my bikes, and quads. My dad even uses it in his Harley. But, At the end of the day tho. All the Major oil brands are good in their own respect.

    I will stand by AmsOil

I run it in my 1.8 and I change the oil every 12,000 miles (recommended change @ 15,00 for turbo applications)

I have had 0 problems and have actually noticed my engine is burning less oil since I have started running it once I bought the car.

End of the day I think any of the high end oils are pretty close. Just depends on who you fall for.

Been running Mobil 1 10w40 for about a year, and have had great luck. 0w40 would leak a little out my valve cover seals with a cold/cool engine, but the 10w40 solved that.

Have run 6 or 7 track days (road course, not drag strip) with the Mobil 1 10w40 and it's held up great.

Negative, I keep a close eye on it. Just pulled the valve cover and put a new gasket on and it looked great.

Additionally I run a bit of diesel in the oil about once a year when changing it to remove any if there is.

First off you are more than welcome to correct me if I am wrong, people do that on occasion. Second, I was told by my local Amsoil distributor that Amsoil gets their oil from the same tap as Mobil 1 but adds there own additives and detergents so I figured I'd believe him. Third, grow up and realize you don't have to make rude remarks if you find someones statement to be false...

I've run quite a few different oils now to test them out. All changed with the same filter at the same 5k interval.

Royal Purple 5W-40 did the worst. Many people have come to the same conclusion with the 1.8T engine as well. It sheared out pretty quickly not to mention when it was drained it was very dark and smelled terrible. Did not like it at all.

Next up was Castrol Syntec 5W-40 (now Castrol EDGE). Pretty decent oil, help up well, and didn't discolor all that much. We use this in our oil changes at the local VW/Audi dealership.

After that I decided to try out the Mobil 1 0W-40. This stuff sucks terribly. I ran it in my W8 and had some serious valvetrain clatter from it after running for a minimal amount of time. It shears out quickly and it's expensive. Avoid.

Next was the Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck. This has gained immense popularity within the past year. I used this in my mom's TT225 along with my S4 and love it. Holds it's weight and does not shear out and definitely doesn't break down under stress. Can be had for a good price and it's readily available as well.

And my current oil - Rotella T6. Got the idea from here and Bob is the Oil Guy. Ran this through mom's TT225 with excellent results and currently have it in my S4. Just finished 2,000 miles on it including a 150 mile spirited cruise. Even hot this stuff is still pretty thick and it's still yet to discolor much from the golden brown it went in as. Can be had for very cheap and can be purchased at Wal-Mart readily. This is the oil I will be sticking with for my VAG vehicles unless they're still under warranty.

IMO from what I've seen the oil specifications mean jack as long as you use a good quality synthetic oil. The only engine I would be much worried about would be the PD diesel motor in the 04-06 vehicles as it is EXTREMELY picky on oil, but for 1.8T and 2.7T vehicles, T6 is the way to go.

It burns less oil because you lined all the leaky gaskets with a hearty coating of sludge.

Wow! I am extremely impressed that oil can make a difference in that much power! I will no longer be using Mobil 1 in any of my cars. Is Nulon readily available? I can't say I have ever heard of it...

I normally run amsoil, but lately I've been putting pentosin both my cars, since I found a local shop that carries it. Honestly, haven't noticed any difference in amsoil to pentosin.

Side note, I put mobil 1 in my truck, just because its cheapier and easy to find.

I just sent that and realized I own a Mercedes so maybe you were in the right :(

But! I have owned 2 b5 A4's, 1 b5 S4 and 1 c4 S6. All of which I used mobile 1 and because of this thread will never use again... Sounds like the rotella t6 is the best oil for the buck!
