    Epc light?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yesterday the epc lit came on as I pulled into a lot. After going inside and doing my business, it was not on when I restarted. Today, it went on while on the highway. Car started acting really strange. Vibrating, clunky sound, very strange feel. Car has 5k miles. It's due for it's service this week but any idea what is going on???

Do you have a VAG COM cable handy? Scanning for fault codes would give some good insight.

And since it came on again and is feeling clunky, don't drive it and contact the dealer ASAP.

Most likely the coil packs. Had to replace the entire left bank a week ago. Vag-com it and it'll show what cylinders are misfiring. Order is passenger side front to pass rear is 1-3 and driver side front to rear is 4-6. Cheap fix. Part should be around 20 bucks online. Good luck.

Wow, was going to start a thread tonight on this as I did get several EPC lights while at the track this past Thurs and Fri. This was my 2nd event. First event, I drove in full automatic mode so I could just focus on the track and learn the lines. No EPC light then. 2nd event (same track) I decided to go manual and use the paddle shifters, keeping the engine in 3rd or 4th most of the time to control exit speed. Both days I got the EPC light thrown. Car would not respond to throttle and vibrated harshly. But after stopping the car, opening the hood (engine wasn't hot, but did it anyway), and then restarting, all was normal again. But the 2nd day it happened again I pulled myself out of the event not knowing what was going on and not wanting to push the engine any further.

Vag Com'd the car and as Circuit says, it was a cylinder not firing correctly so the ECU disabled it (I believe). At the track, some guys thought my car went into limp mode. Besides the cylinder misfiring, though, I also got a ton of communication errors w the ECU. Took the car to the dealer (after switching it to stock mode) and they found the same. They kept my car over the weekend as they wanted to talk to Audi Tech. So I think I have two issues w my car: the coil pack as well as ECU comm issues.. OP, you may just have the coil pack issue.

Anyway, waiting to hear back from the dealer. Car has 3K miles on it. Will post what I hear back. I suspect they will reflash back to stock.

Had the same symptoms minus the communication error. Car ran fine when driving normally but was a mess at higher RPMs for any sustained amount of time. If the cylinder continues to mis-fire it'll throw the car into limp mode and disable the cylinder(s) entirely. Not fun when your redlining 4th and it shuts down. Had about 12k on the odometer. Putting together a DIY shortly. Super easy to swap them at home or track side.

I had the same thing happen and was told it has to Repeat itself for them to look into fixing it. Has to be repeatable. I dont know how that works but I know it was very bad vibrations and they said misfiring could be due to bad gas and it is almost impossible to see if that was the cause so if it doesnt happen again it didnt happen at all ? loll .. They did not fix anything for me.

Well, back from the dealership and picked up my car. They said it was a loose ground wire (on ecu I presume) that caused all the Comm errors. They tightened it back up and voila, all comm fault codes are gone. There's also no misfiring of cylinders, either. According to the dealership, it was the loose ground wire that caused the cylinders to misfire, but now that's been fixed, shouldn't be a problem any more. On the drive home, I tried to put a heavy load on the car, but clearly not as heavy a load as at the track. Anyway, when i got home, I Vag Com'd the car and no diagnostics came back clean as a whistle. I guess only time will tell whether the ground wire was the cause or an issue with plugs/coil pack was. Circuit, is there another way to tell if I have the coil pack/plug issue? And will you be posting your DIY fix to your website or to this thread?

That's not cool. When I told my dealer the car was vibrating weird and engine lights came on, they said come on by and we'll check it out. And even though my car did not exhibit any of the symptoms I described (vibration, EPC light on), they sent me home with a loaner when they saw all the comm errors and said we'll be in touch after we contact Audi tech and fix the problem. Very happy with my dealer.

Glad I found this thread. Anyone else or anymore info provided on this issue?

I received the EPC light and car went completely into limp mode with no power this past Friday when I was leaving work, and this morning when I was leaving for work. I'll have to hookup the VAGCOM tonight to see, but does these symptoms lead to failing coils as it seems like what I'm reading above?

Has there been a how-to that's come out yet, Circuit or anyone else in terms of some instructions with the VAGCOM, and the replacement of the coils? I'm don't doubt I can change them without, just checking to see if there was any guidance out there. How long can I go like this as I need to order new ones? Where is the best place to order these from for a good price? Thanks in advance for any of the above mentioned info.

Same thing happen to me car got lcunky shaky and i took it to the dealer moments after and they told me that it would have to repeat it self for us to fix anything with it hasnt happen again but it was most def a miss fire in one of the cylinders but they told me if it happens again they will look at it. Could be because of gas temp so many variables that are very hard to test.

I have a 2011 S4 that I bought back in the beginning of June; I only have 3500 mileso n it so far. Today, I was coasting along not in gear, and came upon a light that I knew was about to turn yellow. As I said, I was coasting around 30mph, so I slammed it into 3rd gear and hit the gas. I zoomed thru the light just as it turned yellow, and the car began to shake. I was about 1/4 mile from my parking garage so I kept drive till I got to the garage. That's when I saw that the EPC light had come on. I turned the car off, and then back on. The shaking stopped, and everything was normal, but the EPC light was back on. I parked the car and went back to my office. I waited a 1/2 hour while I called my dealership and made an appointment to take the car in this coming Wednesday (right before Thanksgiving). I just went down and re-started the car and the EPC light did not come on.

I hope it is just a non-grounded wire, or something else simple. It was scary.

We are all having the same problem indicating there is some type of systemic issue. The first time this happened I took it in and dealer had no idea said it could be something "in the fuel". They said they put in an additive and would check it again if it repeated. Went a month, then happened again during merge onto highway. Car shaking, no power, coasted off and stop for 5 minutes and it is ok.

Frankly, I fear this is going to be a difficult problem to address but is totally unacceptable for a 55k car to randomly go into limp mode. I also worry it is bad for the engine when it goes unbalanced when the light comes on.

I am going to take it back in a week. In the meantime, has anyone gotten a legit explanation for this or a real fix?

Here's the update of my particular situation: it turned out the coil pack on cylinder 1 needed to be replaced. They saw the mis-fire on that cylinder, and then moved that coil pack to cylinder 2, and saw the same misfirings. After replacing the coil pack, there were no more misfires. i mentioned that I saw a number of forum posts about the EPC indicator to the Audi service rep, but he said he hadn't seen this happening often. I believe Audi will need to take a look into their coil packs.

Unless someone is fortunate enough to throw multiple codes or unlucky to have it happen twice they probably will say some coil packs maybe bad but some work just as planned.

Wow guys dont really mean to bring an old thread alive but I'm experiencing the same thing for the 2nd time with an Audi vehicule ! I had a 2008 RS4 and the EPC would come up and the car will shake, and it was the coil pack. Now its happening on my 2012 S4 and I was wondering what it was ... too dumb to remember it. Anyway it has done this before, but now the other day I was filling my car, the employee hit the REGULAR button so I fill her up with REGULAR (here in canada its low octane)... so I tought it might have been it .. anyway thanks guys i'll bring the car to the dealership!

My EPC light came on today while driving and the car choked. Never experienced it before so it scared the crap out of me especially it is a 2014 with only 7,500 miles. What the crap? The car is practically new and it did that? Turned the engine off and then restarted it and it was fine with no light. Called dealer and said to bring it in to have it checked out.

Good to know it is a known issue but what if I was accelerating to enter a highway and then it chokes? Not very safe. Com' on Audi. My previous 06 A4 never had any issues for a very long time.

Just got car back from dealer and they said there were no codes from the EPC light. Not sure why it came on. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Meshed on the gas today while entering the freeway. EPC light came on and the car went into limp mode for a few seconds. Hope it's not the coil pack.

    EPC - Misfire on C3, C6

Bumping this old thread since I recently had this problem.

This happened during session 5 of a track day. My car threw the EPC fault and went into limp mode. Came into the pits and shut down the car. Got out my phone and checked the diagnostic codes and only the misfires on cylinders 3 and 6 were logged. Current mileage on the car is 41,500. After about 5 minutes of sitting I decide to restart the car and see what happens. No EPC code and the car is making nice with no misfires. Took the car out on the road and did several short WOT pulls to see if the issue would reoccur - nada. Session 6 is still coming up so I decide to run in it and the car did just fine. What happened? Who knows? Definitely will consider all the ideas here - but will offer some additional data points. (1) I was experimenting ESC on and off - I had just turned ESC back on prior to hitting the next straight when the problem occurred. (2) I was suspicious of the gas given that the track and station are in the boonies - but everyone from the track uses this station. (3) While lapping the data from the OBD-II dongle sometimes disappeared. I counted this against a crummy Bluetooth connection- but maybe it's coincidence not to ignore. - That's all I've got. I'll wait for this to reoccur and make another determination.

Had the same thing happen to me recently the second I went stage 2. Bank 2 misfires at WOT after 5k rpm. Power loss, limp mode, epc light. Already replaced the coils and spark plugs. Also did a carbon cleaning done at 65k (@83k now). Misfire isn’t consistently on one cylinder which is why I don’t believe it’s an injector. Any insight, updates or solutions?

I am stage 2 through IE. I replaced the plugs NGK 8's as well as the coil packs (APR) in the spring last year. I am now getting a misfire in CYL 6 consistently at WOT. It throws the EPC light and hides that cylinder. The last time, the cylinder stopped misfiring and began to run normally even with the EPC light on. I scanned with my OBDEleven and stated misfire cylinder 6 / cylinder 6 hide cylinder / misfire detected during combustion. I am going to swap the plugs again and flip flop cylinder 4 and 6's coil packs to see if it follows. If that fails, I am going to look at the fuel injectors as the car has 82,000 miles on it, as well as look for leaking from the super charger intercoolers. All this is going to be swapped come spring anyways. The car does run fine during normal driving.

Misfire like that and cylinder deactivation at WOT is contaminated spark plug due to IC core dripping coolant in that cylinder or you’ve got clogged CAT on that side of the engine. Cylinders 3 and 6 will be the first to complain about misfires if the CAT is clogging up since they’re so close and have less exhaust manifold room to push volume into on the exhaust stroke. When that’s limited, it doesn’t all make it out and you’ll get a misfire. Start with the IC cores and go from there. If those leak, it’s usually again the back two cylinders or one up from there to the middle ones.
