OEM filter, nice and cheap shipped from Scotty@advanced
Shell Rotella T6 from Walmart at $19.99 a jug. 1.5 jugs does the job.

Cheapest Audi oil change you'll ever get.

Can I purchase a filter locally at a Audi dealer? Or maybe an aftermarket one at Autozone/Advance auto parts/pep boys??

    Thanks Vinchenzo

yes of course, but they'll probably charge an arm and a leg for an OEM filter at your local dealer, and OEM is always best, if not then MANN filters are acceptable, wouldn't really go any other route.

I've been using Mann filter since my first VW/Audi, I think they are pretty good filters!

Currently, I am using Mobile 1 0W-40 on my 01' Audi A6 2.7t for the past 140K (oil change every 5k), they worked fine.

I'm from nassau too, but I ordered my oil change stuff online from europaparts.com a vendor on here. they're right in jersey so ground shipping only takes a day to get here, I was already ordering all my parts from them for my timing belt/valve cover gasket service so I got an oil change kit from them as well.

Don't know if your's has one already, but the oil caps these cars came with were non-vented, and the updated one is vented to help when the pcv/spider hose system gets clogged and the motor becomes pressurized causing gasket failure, europaparts has these as well in addition to MANN filters and pretty much everything you need for our cars OEM or otherwise, check them out.

depends a bit on your climate, i just changed mine to mobil 1 0w40, winters coming and it gets to -35deg c here so 0w is a must. just stick to what is approved or not. Lots of guys use rotella, its cheap but not approved.

The Audi approved motor oil makes my mechanic mad ... he insists to put Mobil-1 5W-30 in my Audi. I told him at the back the bottle VW502.00 is not found. He said "trust me, this is good oil with my 30 years automobile experience." He got MAD after I show him the above 2011 Audi approved oil list and tell him that ONLY 0W-40 is approved. Funny thing is he ask me to call the Audi dealer. I told him the list is from Audi, the daddy of all dealers. He still does not want to believe it... funny guy.

I now think should I go back to his garage as he does not has such basic knowledge of Audi approved motor oil. I am going to extract the 5W-30 out and fill M-1 0W-40 back in tomorrow.

Nicky - Don't worry about the Rotella, it's fine. A lot of folks get very hung up about what's on a dealer/manufacturer approved list. What you really need to be concerned about is that there aren't any additives that are harmful and that you are in the correct weight range. Rotella T6 meets those requirements. Many of those approved lists are due to agreements and partnerships between the manufacturer and those related parts/oil/ect.. companies. Some of it is actually based on science but some of it is just based on deals/partnerships.

I've run Rotella in my Audi for the last year with no issues (save for the damn VC leaks but that's unrelated). I also use it in my VW's, save for the Scirocco's which just get 20-50 castrol normal dead dino's since it's cheap, does the job and they have a high change rate.

Continue with the Rotella, just make sure the weight is fine for your climate. 5w should be fine for NY since you generally don't have constant temps in the deep negatives during winter (I'm actually from the Buffalo area so I know what a good lake effect winter is like up there). Just remember to give the engine some time to warm up before taking off and keep the rev's low till she's near normal running temps. 0w is great for the great white north since they see weeks of deep negative temps. Then again, many cars up there have block heaters too which is a massive help.

I know I'm sure to get flamed for what I've said, but that's fine. I've never had an engine lock up or fail in any way due to the oil I've used or work I've done. I did have a VR6 snap a timing chain, but that's because the chain guides broke and I didn't catch it quick enough. Just keep you oil changed at proper intervals or even less than normal if it makes you feel better and you will be just fine.

The motor oil subject sure starts a long debate. Everyone has its point.

I think my decision of change is correct because Mobil-1 0W-40 is in the Audi list (safe w/VW50200 listed at bottle) and should be better than viscosity 5W-30 for the Boston winter.

Both are Mobil-1, 0W-40 has VW50200 approved and the other does not, so this is not partnership issue as upstair stated.

The guy I bought my 2.7T from at 37k used Mobil1 0W-40 and I have for the next 153k miles. No problems. I will admit that my spring oil change usually involves about 5 qts of 5W-30 and the rest 0w-40, but winter is straight 0W-40 to ensure the turbos are well lubed when it is below zero out. It gets changed every 7-9k and that used to be 4 changes a year, now down to two.

Its motor oil. As long as you are not high performance, pretty much any name brand fully synthetic from 5w30 to 0w40 will be just fine. So many people make such a huge deal out of the oil they put in their car saying that the other stuff is junk, and this stuff is the best thats why I pay 10 dollars or more per quart blah blah, and really have absolutely no reason to put it in their car.

A Mann filter, (10-12 dollars at any online distributor pretty much) with a full synthetic as stated about will be just fine.

In the 2.5 years of owning my car, I've used Mobil 1, Castrol Synthetic, and Fuchs in either 0w-40, 5w-40 or 5w-30. Never had a problem with any of them. Just keep up with the service intervals and you'll be fine.
