Fog Machine to find boost leak?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I have a question for ya...

Does anyone know if it would be safe to use a fog machine to check for vacuum/boost leaks? I know the pressure would have to be monitored, but my main concern is the fog itself. Would it cause any issues if I'm using a water based fog machine? I would rather do the test myself (and can't afford a professional kit) because the last time I had it done at a shop, they couldn't find any leaks (which I found myself the next day using just compressed air). I'm not loosing any vacuum (22-23 inHg at idle) but I'm loosing 8psi of boost.

    lmk what you guys think...

Just build your own boost leak tester from home depot.

It costed me ~10$ and i found all my boost leaks.

Re: Fog Machine to find boost leak?

You can make your own smoke tester with a quart paint can, a rag, mineral oil, lighter, air fittings, and an air compressor or bicycle pump.

I'll look for a DIY already written somewhere and post the link.

I'd be interested in this Rich... have recently run into two separate instances when a boost leak test yielded nada but a smoke test did.

couldn't find the method I use, but this one works too and is probably a better setup than mine. The only difference between mine and this link is that 1. I use a quart paint can that you can buy at lowes/home depot; 2. I just kind of soak a rag with baby oil, let it burn for about 30 seconds and then and then drop it in the can while it's kind of "ember'ing". Set my regulator to a super low psi and let it saturate the intake tract. Also included a video I found on youtube of basically the same general idea as the DIY link and my method.

Personally I like my method.. it's super simple and smokes forever and I don't need all that extra clutter laying around. Super portable. I prefer the KISS method... but I've done the glow plug thing and it definitely works well also.

note: You want the bare minimum amount of air pressure to push the oil smoke through the system. You get a denser smoke this way.

I don't think that it would be safe. I guess you can use haze machines instead of fog machines.Though, it will be a bit costly but it will fill in appropriately for fog machine.

Re: Fog Machine to find boost leak?

I made my own leak tester for use with my air compressor. Used a fog machine with good results. Just put the fog machine up to the TIP for a minute then capped it with the leak tester. Voila, smoke test.

It's entirely safe, people have been doing this since before you or I were born.

Sorry to resurrect, thinking of using a fog machine to the intake of my air compressor to check for boost leak. Anyone tried? Will be trying later. It won't be touching the MAF so I think it should be reasonably safe.

You can make your own tester less than $5. Male compressor fitting and 2" PVC cap. I just made mine and going to find a leak I have tonight

I like the idea of the smoke test
