    aluminum vs steel lightweight flywheel

i am trying to debate on a flywheel for my car. car will be stage 3 frankenturbos with meth. car is a daily driver so i was debating a full face stage 3 clutch instead of a pucked clutch. from what i hear the aluminum flywheels are a little too light and the stock flywheel is 28 pounds. i feel that a solid steel flywheel is the best best since its in the middle of the two and should chatter less. i also read that the aluminum can get messed up from the heat transfer. lastly i read that somehow you can lose torque when you go with a lighter flywheel but it seems like thats only if you are launching the car. car is daily driver and i dont plan on launching it much if at all, but will definately be driven spiritedly. if anyone has input between these flywheels please let me know. i am debating between the 350 dollar fidanza and the ttv steel flywheel for 500 (every other steel flywheel is 850 or more which is crazy). thanks in advance...

the aluminum flywheel sucks. i stayed with stock flywheel but the steel billet one is nice. these cars run better with heavier flywheels because it boosts the turbos earlier. also in corners having the extra mass helps you not fall out of the powerband.

al flywheel makes the car slower till it boosts later then once youre in boost it does rev faster.

learn how to rev match and this isnt a problem. but for drag racing the additional mass does make it easier to keep the revs up for easier launching. rev matching downshifts are a breeze with the aluminum. and the thing revs sooo freakin fast. its a compromise either way. see whats most valuable to you....

I went the same route as you and opted for 034's single mass steel flywheel.

It revs exactly how i'd like it to, but this motors rather lethargic throttle response won't be cured by it as i've found out.

Also being single mass makes it slightly less smooth than i'd have imagined, you get the same sort of grabbing as you engage at low rpm's as you would with an old worn at clutch.

I just got the 034 aluminum flywheel and love it so far. Its mated to an rs4 clutch and reving/rev matching is much easier than the stock flywheel. It might be a bit more involved to drive with a lwfw, but the 2.7 has enough torque where its still perfectly streetable. Also theres barely any chatter which I didnt want since my car is a DD. Some shop told me that you cant resurface the stock dual mass flywheel anyway.

I have an Aluminum LWFW, and it does affect launching a bit. I have to launch from a higher RPM than typical to compensate for the bogging. I do have low RPM chatter, as well.

I don't think that it affects driveability other than that - since our cars have enough torque at idle to make pulling out from a stop pretty effortless, even with the light flywheel.

Revmatching is wonderful with it. I pretty much heel-toe all the time, now, and the LWFW makes that possible. Without it, it's just absurdly slow to rev.

So, there are your tradeoffs. A steel might indeed be a nice balance.

You know, I used to be super against aluminum LWFW's but now after driving one for like 40,000 miles, I really never notice it. When I first got it, it seemed to chatter all the time, but after a couple weeks I noticed it didn't do it anymore. I simply modified my driving style a little bit and didn't try to lug it from 1500rpm (although it still can do that).

If you are worried at all, go with a steel. It will almost guarantee no chatter, and still rev WAY better then stock. You really have no idea how much better it is until you drive one back to back; the stock dual mass is sooooo slow. However, the aluminum isn't as bad as I had made it out to be to myself.
