Hey guys im new here so dont rape me to hard.
i did alot of searching and it only took me in circles, anyway
I own a mk4 GLI and i got my dad back in the audi scene. he is thinking about a b6 a4 or a b7 a4
both cars have about 60k miles
2004 is the 3.0 quattro not s-model or anything, but it is stick
    here is the link
    http://www.fredlaverycompany.com/use...7b491fe6a9.htm

2005 a4 is a avant and were european so my dad loves the wagon
    heres the link
    http://www.fredlaverycompany.com/use...00de18f539.htm

what are some issues with there two?
is the 3.0 a good engine?
    what would you rather have?
    im fairly new on audis...
transmission doesnt matter my pops is 59 and doesnt need to race he is going to keep it stock for the most part. maybe lower it and some OEM+ here and there.

any help would be great thanks!

The first link assuming I'm missing something is an ultra-sport that only came in the 4 cylinder unless someone did the conversion on the front and rear, wheels, rear lip and door blades. Aside from that if it is in fact the 1.8 I would do that versus the Avant. I really like Avants but where it's an automatic that would be a deciding factor for me... IMO

The first link is for a 3.0 - it has chrome trim around the windows, not black like it would have been on a 1.8T.

The 3.slow would be my car of choice - looks well cared for and I prefer to shift for myself, I am not 59 but think that if I was that would be my preference. These cars are very different and you could go either way - it really depends on what your goals are - do you like better gas mileage and do you need to haul stuff around? (go with z wagon) Good luck.

It is in fact a 3.0 Ultrasport. Rare, but they are around. They are both getting to the mileage where things start need replacing, and it will be a bit more expensive than the MK4 you currently have. I have a 3.0 manual, and it is really an enjoyable car. The power is there, and smoother than the 2.0T. My mom had a B7 2.0T auto sedan, and it is a very capable car. With a chip, easily a much faster car, and a real hoot to drive (I got an APR trial version at Waterfest with her car... hehe) a lot more than the 3.0!
The 2.0T auto is geared for economy, but the sport mode will keep the revs longer. Cruising on the highway, the 3.0 will rev around 2800 at 70mph, and the 2.0T will be around 2200 at the same. It doesn't sound like a big difference, but it's noticeably higher in the 3.0. However, you are right at the powerband and there isn't a need to downshift in 6th gear to pass. The torque is right there. The 2.0T has some hesitation till the turbo picks up around 2800rpm. I average around 300miles to the tank, and my mom's 2.0T was about 350, both on premium.
They both seem loaded with the options, so it's not like you are comparing a base 2.0T with a loaded 3.0 or vice versa. The adaptive bixenons on the B7 are freakin awesome too! (one thing I wish I could swap into my 3.0) If they were both manuals, I'd go for the avant, as I really love the B7 and the tuning possibilities of the 2.0T are really strong. But if your pops isn't going to mod it, than the 3.0 Ultrasport is really a great package to leave as is.

I would be leaning towards Avant, I love them, has navi too. But it is automatic, if it was manual then I would say go for it.

3.0 6spd. It's a very nice looking car and will be a lot more fun to drive, although that avant is definitely a great car. Get JHM to tune your ECU and you'll be grinning from ear to ear.

    I say the B7 Avant.....Why you ask?

Because 2 years ago I was looking for that car, hell a 3.0 6mt and had to go 2 states away just to get it. Unable to find the USP version. Now you have found it.....I'm buying it!!!! Muhahahha lol. j/p

Go for the 3.0. Your dad will love it. And if not. Let me know so I can sneak it ;)

I would say its really a tossup. If he wants a wagon, get that. If he wants a sedan DEFINITELY get that. I would personally go the 3.0 USP. I just bought a 1.8t usp and love it. My other car is a 2.0t non-sline wagon so I feel like i've got a good comparison point.

If he wants to mod the car, go with the 2.0t (sounds like he doesn't though). Otherwise the immediate power of the 3.0 will make it SO much easier to drive (no turbo lag). Plus its got a 6-speed and black interior!

Honestly, either one, you can't go wrong. I love both my cars. Each serves a purpose (wagon=trip with dog, sedan=more fun on corners).

Drive them both and see which one you like better.

Edit: Also the top A4, as others have said, is a USP model which is above the Sport model. Basically, it has aluminum trim inside, dope 18" RS4 Wheels, front and rear trim/valence package, s4 decklid spoiler, and the sport suspension. Very rare on the 3.slow. It was a $3k option new. 15k is a decent price for that car.

I have a B6 3.0 sedan and a B7 2.0T Avant - difference vs your scenario is both mine are manual. Both drive really well but the 3.0 has the smoother motor while the 2.0T is more fun since it is lighter in feel (oh and the fact I have a Revo chip probably helps :-) ) - they are just different vehicles and you know what I love driving them both.

Dating myself, I'm approx the same age as your Dad, so would be pretty certain he would like either car, though of course that depends also on what he's coming from.

The other couple of posters have laid out your key criteria though - manual vs automatic; wagon vs sedan; decide which is most important to your Dad and go with that.

^+1 - if maintenance/operating/depreciation cost is a significant factor, get a Japanese or domestic car. If FUN is the main factor get the Audi

Me personally i'd go with the 3.0 USP, I mean it is a 3.0 USP in DG with a 6MT.
How often are you going to find one of those? Probably never again.
I personally LOVE Avants and wish I had a B6 Avant but that B7 just looks boring and stock and you could find those all over.
The USP looks sexy as hell just the way it sits! I guess i'm a little biased though!

Audi maintenance is expensive period. It helps if you can do your own labor!

    QUESTIONS ON A4 3.0 L6 Quattro w/ Tiptronic

I am looking into purchasing a 2005 Audi A4 quattro that has been mainly dealer serviced. I sell cars and have taken in a ton of trades but this one looks like a gem. has 110k on it and drives great. Just wanted to see if there are any things I should expect on this particular car. What I am hearing is that the timing belt is something that needs to be replaced around this mileage. I wanted to see if there are any other major concerns with this vehicle I should be aware of. Oil changed regularly and what not andit seems like a nice car.

My 2005 B6 3.0 has a lot less miles than yours (currently 118,000km approx 73,000 mi). No major issues for me; coilpacks were replaced under recall warranty a few years ago; timing belt and water pump were done in 2011 as part of my last Audi Care maintenance (I was lucky with that as Audi removed the timing belt as part of CPO/AudiCare in the later years).

Not expecting any issues for the forseeable future with mine. Go for it...

Yeah I love it... - according to Audi Canada, mine is 1 of 13 Canada-wide, for the 2008 model year, that are full S-Line Avants with 6 speed manual transmission.

    Exiled.......

id go w the b7 2.0t ......way less issues.....from what I've seen, experienced and read about on this board. I do know though that a properly maintained 3.0 can exceed 300 k miles.....not so sure on the 2.0.... Buts its all the other little niggling issues that will give ya heartburn.
