2.0 stroker FSI or AEG crank?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yeah, we are having this discussion.
I'm 99.9% going with the FSI crank, but is anyone using the AEG? The price difference is nuts between the two (obviously would be). Ever heard of the AEG failing? Opinions?

Everyone says the FSI is overkill. And you have to have the gear for the oil pump changed.

I have never heard of an AEG failing in a stroker application..........ever.

I think the oil gear needs swapped, and I know you have to have the trigger gear swapped on the AEG. but I think the trigger gear on the FSI is the same as ours

Well, I'm about to pull the trigger on my stroker, and need to figure out which crank to go with. I'm not sold on either one. FSI is obviously premium, but at 3.5X the cost. If I can get away with the AEG with no ill effects then why not?

I am using an AEG crank, Clint used one and David has one. David and I have quite a bit of mileage on ours. Mine was brand new when we built my motor. I bought it from Issam.

The real question is can you find an AEG. I wanted to use an AEG in my build but couldn't locate one so I opt to purchase a new FSI crank.

exactly... nothing wrong with the AEG crank. I have never heard of anyone breaking or messing one up with too much power. cheaper also of course. I have an AEG crank in my new 2liter... which I have yet to install.

FSi is only a waste of money if budget is the primary concern. If you want less rotating mass go FSi, if budget is more of a concern then go AEG. Either way you can make lots of power and wont have issues. I found my brand new fsi crank for $450.

Have the entire assembly balanced as well.

You can buy a whole AEG motor for the price of an FSI crank. Then you have a 2.0L block and crank. Don't get an AEG block though, they don't have oil squirters. Find a later DBW 2.0L 8V mk4 engine (AVH, AZG, BGD) and IIRC they all have oil squirters. You will have to machine the thermostat interface on any block other than an AMB though.

true, but how do you inspect the journals? would suck to buy a whole motor just for the crank and find the journals are scored.

i looked for an aeg crank and also found them about as difficult to find as an fsi, maybe harder unless you buy a whole motor.

as i said before, 450 is not bad for a brand new fsi crank. look around you'll probably find one as well. unless a few hundred is going to break the budget. then go AEG

Difference between the 2 cranks has to do with material. But I highly doubt anyone on this forum board will be pushing enough power to break an AEG crank. And if they have power goals they think would exceed the threshold of the AEG crank, I highly doubt that would even be an option on thier parts list.

How much work will be done to the TDI crank to work on the 06A block (same 83mm bore and 144x20 rods for 2067cc of displacement)? There is one on ebay right now for $275 shipped.

the real difference is in how the crank is made, and the resulting weight and strength of the crank, and therefore rotating mass of the motor assembly.

neither crank is going to break.

Want to put the parts list together for AMB stroker:

When buying a used AEG: have it polished?

What else is needed? 144x20 rods, 83mm pistons/rings. What rod and crank bearings to use? What thrust washers? Oil pump/pickup tube? Front and rear seal?

Same as awm block. I picked up an fsi crank for $150 shipped. I would also suspect the aeb and amb cranks to be the same. Look up part numbers. I also suggest a polish.
