    Source for rear axle?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I sheared a rear axle shaft this weekend and need a replacement asap. Does anyone know if the shaft is separable, so I could just replace that instead of the whole assembly. Also does anyone know of an aftermarket alternative, the OEM part is $500+.

Also can anyone confirm that the 2.7t, 3.0 and 4.2 rear axles are the same, seems that way from digging around in ETKA.

    Thanks, any advice/insight is appreciated.

Which car is it for? I doubt the axles are all universal. www.car-parts.com is a junk yard search engine. Shokan is another audi junk yard. and depending on the model you have audis4parts.com is another. ecstuning is another but the price tag will be worth an arm or leg.

just needed one of these myself. the 4.2 is the only axle that'll work. i bought a used one, pulled my old one and its being rebuilt for $100.00. prolly do the same with the other after i get the first one back. i get great discounts at a few audi dealerships if you want new, prolly save you close to $200 bucks

I've got a few good used ones. Which side did you need and how the @#$% did you shear a rear axle?

I just had to order 2 new fronts ones last week, I think Raxles.com have the best.

    Just give them a call.

Rear axles are the same for C5's. When I replaced my 4.2 rear diff with the one from the 2.7, axles were the exact same part number. I have two rear axles if anyone needs them.

    Pabl0 thanks for the info.

Scott I'll email you momentarily. Broke the axle launching the car hard on the wrong kind of pavement.

Frank, thanks for the recommendation. I emailed raxles last night to see if they had a rear.

Shokan has one and they are close so I may go with that.

I'll post pics of the axle once I get it out tonight.

The rear axles are identical. Proof would be my car. I parted an 01 A6 2.7T and swapped everything into my 00 A6 4.2. The rear axles had the exact same part number on it and I now have the rear axles from the 2.7T on my A6 4.2. Not sure what "wheel side" part is different. They are identical.

Pabl0, I used 2.7T rear axles in my 4.2. I'm glad you're certain they're not compatible - I've just put 14,000 miles on the wrong axles, and without this information, something bad might have happened.

Beemercer, PM'd you, I've got a couple spares as well. You might consider having yours retubed - a local shop did that for my fronts for a very reasonable price. It added some weight, but ensured I don't break them.

^I definitely considered it, but from a quick look last night the CV looked bashed up too. There's a clip piece on the inner CV that kind of holds it all in I gather (not an expert on this stuff) and its was cracked it two. I'm gonna still look into it though, would be nice to have spares

Bryan@audis4parts has one for me that just needs to come off the car, should hopefully have it tomorrow.

Fair enough. For the record, I've got some spares as well, ready to mail if you break another.

The axles are the same left to right but from V6 to V8 they are not the same (this doesn't mean they won't retrofit however)

Hmm..Both my 4.2 and the 2.7 had 4B0501203C rear axles and clearly states the part number on the axle shaft. Not sure whats going on there. Maybe my car had axles changed prior to me owning the car. In any case, it seems any C5 rear axle will work.

well as scotty just said they are different part numbers. since you are trying to be a jerk i'll just say this...it took me a weekend to complete my 6spd swap. it took you over a year lol

and i'm glad they fit and its been confirmed. makes everything easier

Here's another good laugh; I was looking around for a 17mm allen to take out the axle bolt, figured I'd check sears. So I searched on their website to be sure, and look what I found

I can confirm this with the RS6 and S6 that Scotty is right about the incompatibility between the V8 and V6. This all depends on what was done for your conversion. Since your rear diff is fro an A6 (4.111:1) then whoever installed it cold have swapped the axles to match the diff flanges or they could have swapped the flanges to the V8 ones and kept the axles. What's the opposite hole to hole diameter of your broken axle? I'm curious whether it was impact damage that caused it to fatigue. The fracture doesn't look like torque was the root cause. Looks like it was sawn in half. I've got two sets of A6 ones lying around but you'd be better off getting a fresh reliable set from Scotty. I wouldn't recommend replacing just one either, as the rear diff probably transferred all the power to the other ale when the other one broke and it's probably in a not so good state either.

^Steve, I'll have to check the axles tomorrow, hopefully the A6 4.2 one works so I can get on the road again. Also agreed I think there were a lot of factors that went into the break, I'll have to inspect the shaft when I have time.
