someone's car was parked, rubbing against my bumper. what do you do? (in NYC)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    HI AZ members,
I ran into an unexpected situation today and I wondered how others would react in a similar situation.
    Here's the story begins.
Today, I parked my car (B8 A4) on a street in NYC and when I came back to my car, I found someone's car (A8) being parked behind mine by rubbing against my rear bumper.
As a person who babies the car and be extremely careful to avoid getting any scratch or damage on my car, seeing someone's car kissing my rear bumper, was already enough to upset me wheather there is any scratch or not. I decided not to move my car until the owner of the other car shows up.
After waiting for about 20 minutes, he finally showed up and I told him that his car was kissing my bumper that there may be a scratch.
His first reaction was "This is New York. Something like this happens everyday. Why are you trying to make a big deal out of this?"
Instead of apologizing, his reaction was very rude.
That's it. That completely made me upset.
I moved my car and there is a very tiny scratch on my ibis white bumper from the license plate holding screw of his car.
To be honest, it was not big scratch but still clearly visible on my clean white bumper.
I said "look. there is a scratch. That's from your license plate."
He did not even think about apologizing but kept looking at me like a crazy man.
I was about to call the police and have a police report filed and have my insurance company involved but I had my family and didn't want to go through hassle either. Also, I wasn't sure what the policeman's reaction would have been after seeing that tiny scratch as well.
So, I decided to give him some sort of advice (When you damage someone else's property, the first thing you should have done, is to apologize instead of calling it a very natural thing that should be accepted to everyone) and then let him go.

Anyways, my question to you guys who drive in the city or crowded places where there are many cars rubbing against other cars more often is, do you usually not care when someone leaves a tiny scratch from parking? or do you guys actually call the police and have police report filed?
What would you have done if you were in my position?
I'm trying to figure out how I can handle situation better when and if I run into a similar situation in the future. I would like to handle it in a right and normal manner.
Thanks for reading the long story.

I cannot stand when fucking shit like that happens.. I hate parking anywhere in NY.. this state is infested with idiotic drivers..

I've had my car backed into countless times with me in the car or near it.. little love taps but enough to see the car jerk back and people don't seem to care one damn bit.

Last time a lady parked inbetween my car and my landlords car, her front bumper was sitting on top of my landlords rear bumper and her rear bumper was 2 inches away from my front bumper.. of course she had to hit me while parking her gigantic mercury. It was 4am and I was coming home from working 13 hours so I was a bit pissy and tired so seeing that made me lose my mind. I ended up snapping her windshield wipers which I regret doing now but I was too pissed off at the moment. (Keep in mind it was not the first time I've seen her park like that.. everytime she parks, she hits something)

When I had my 350Z the third day of ownership I park away from a pizzaeria I was going into. A explorer parks next to me so now Im getting upset cause I can see from the window of the pizzaria than a 350lb woman proceeds to swing the door open and ding my car on a crease of the door ( making it very hard to get out. I walked outside and said to the woman "hey you dingd my car" She says "No I didnt" I tell her I watched her do it and my car was in flawless condition. I even opened her door and showed her where it matched up. She told me "good luck proving I did that in this lot" then I walked away and she moved her truck somewhere else.

    I hate people like that

Anyway I walked over the her truck afterward and kicked her door almost completely in half. Hope she knew it was me lol but it was like 5 years ago. Maybe she learned to watch her fat ass getting out of cars. dumb oversized whore

i feel your pain. i went to Boston for a wedding and parked on the street. came back and found a hole in my rear bumper from someone's license plate screw (when my car was brand new).

that's just messed up, people have no respect. and the owner was a A8 owner, too, which makes it even worse.

    Thanks for your inputs.
There are always people with conscience who respect others' properties but there are others who do not value others' properties.
That's probably why there are thieves and scammers out there.
One thing I remembered just now is that the guy who left a damage on my car said "your car is nothing compared to mine."
Well, when I heard that, it just blew my brain and I got lost what to say (it was better talking to a wall).
Regardless of he drives an A8 or Ferrari or whatever, damaging other's property is absolutely not right regardless it is an A4 or Pinto, one's property is important to him/her.
Plus, value-wise, my car is brand new (actually 1 year old/ $40K) A4 while his A8 was probably older than 09 A8 not S8 or W12, so the value on that car isn't that great either.
It was just not a good day for me. Although it is a small scratch, when I see that scratch on my bumper, it hurts my feeling.
Someone may laugh at me but I'm a guy who spends 3+ hours doing car wash and remove every bit of tar one by one.

^^I'm debating getting that right now.

To akinaboy, calling the Police would not get you anywhere. It would just make you loose valuable time. They would NOT write out a police report for you. How do I know? I had a similar situation arise more than once. One time was exactly the same as yours. Someone was parked behind me sitting on my bumper literally, and they were parked in an illegal spot anyway (on a pump), when I release the e-brake on my car the car lunged forward which shows how much the car was pushing up on mine. Scratches on the rear bumper, police didnt do shit.
Second situation happened a few months ago. parked my car as the first legal non-commercial parking spot. Wasn't gone even two hours and come back to my car to see my grille cracked and ring holder hanging. Checked the van parked in front of me and his rear bumper matched up exactly with my grille. Called the commercial company, the driver of the fan came, admit to his mistake and went to get money out of the atm, and then the smartass boss came and told me to call the cops. So i did. I went as far as getting the police supervisor of the station come down, had my bro, and his friend there....cops didn't do shit. Told me it wasn't worth it and that i can fill out a civilian damage report or whatever they call it. They told me i can go to small claims court if i want to pursue it further.

Sadly, idiots like this exist all over the city which doesn't help in any way. No respect for others property. I wanted to smack out every window of the guys car and drive off.

The only downside with that is if you actually get caught doing it you can get fucked over, but I guess tapping and damaging bumpers doesn't fall under the same category.

small scratch or tiny or big it isnt really up to the officer to decide... he just feels the report...so if a small scratch pissed you off you have all the rights in the world to call the cops...

or you can ask for the guys id, take a photo with your phone and dont call the cops... he will be glad you didnt call the cops... then you have his name and home adress (assuming he gave you the id and it isnt fake and he didnt ask for yours) you can now do many things to ruin his life for f*%#ing with your audi...

A friend of mine used to have an A4 and would park exclusively in garages. He ended up repainting the bumper anyway. I look for roomy spots or spots at the end of an area and give plenty of room (but not enough for another car). I still haven't picked up a bumper guard. Sadly it wouldn't be worth it to go through all the hassle, just kick their car or something if it's bad enough.

There should be a popo horror stories thread...lol

    Check this one out:

Was coming down from Yonkers on i87 and waiting inline to exit out at Van Courtland, then some banana rower in a mini van decides that he doesn't need to get in line and cuts everyone off from like the middle lane. As I'm about to let off the brake this jizz master cuts me off, if I would've let go of the brakes, he would smashed into me. So I go around him, pull down the window, and let off on him. Never in a million years I'd imagine of hearing what came out that c0ck suckers mouth... "You drive an Audi, you got money like that! So what!"

Holy shit, WTF, I told him he was an idiot and his reasoning made so sense. So because I drive a ringer you can smash into it, WTF, fucking crack baby. My boy in the passenger then told me he was drunk. Then the inbreed tries to ram his shittyvan into my car. I go around him, we exchange more words, at this point my boy is like...let me know man (he's a kickboxer and has been dying to put those skills to use in real word drama). I told him, take down his plates, so he did. The 50th precint is a few block away, so I headed there.

This is where it gets interesting. My boy goes up to the officer at the front desk and explains what just took place. Tells her that he was driving drunk, tried to use his-fail-at-life mobile to hit us, AND THAT WE HAD WRITTEN HIS INFORMATION DOWN! The bitch tells him, "oh, he's probably gone by now, and we can't do anything." ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. WE HAVE A PICTURE OF THE CAR, HIS LICENSE PLATE, AND YOU CAN'T PUT OUT A APB AND NAB HIS ASS. JUST WOW. FOOKING USELESS.

The sad part is, that i'm pretty sure that if my boy and I would've wrecked him. It would've been us getting shitted on by the cops.

In the end, all I can say is, connections + license plate = where the foock you live!

I never park my car in city streets .. I avoid it as much as possible... and have done so less than 5 time in this past year.. long story short.. i was in a situation two weeks ago where there was no public lots available .. found decent spot in a small single lane street.... come back 45 min later.. passenger mirror cracked to shreds.. when i saw the mirror.. i didnt react out of anger.. just walked inside my car and drove off.. there wasnt anything i can do.. calling the cops would have been a waste of time.. no damage was done to the mirror housing so i didnt go to my insurance company...

dealer quoted me $389 for just the glass..

took this pic after i got to work.. I blame myself for not folding in my
    mirrors

    nyc sucks
when i called the cops here in md for a jizzmonger in a cadilac trying to ram everything he sees off the road including me they sent out a unit immediately
i belive nyc cops would do the same... its all about how you talk, call the cops while the shit is happening and sound affraid for your life they will send a unit
(they cant take the risk that something would actually happen and now there is a recording of you calling scared for your life and they didnt do shit....)

Because I know how NY'ers are and that they dont give a shit I always park my car in a paid parking lot/garage when I get there and walk where I need to, my F%*king legs work just fine. I make sure I go over what ever blemishes I have on the car with parking attendant before i hand over my key and get the ticket...then at least I know who to blame when I come back and something new is there. Its not the best place or the cheapest but for a couple $$$ extra I have piece of mind and some insurance. Never park on the street in the city...Everyone plays bumper cars...lets not even talk about confusing parking signs, tickets, and the sheriff towing and impounding fees for that id rather pay the $15-$60 and know my car will be there when I get back.

Thats how they park in NYC.

Like 4BiddnA4, its worth parking in a garage. $20 vs $500 for a bumper spray.

Parking my car once on the street, got a ticket, got a scratch. Never again.

I hate to say it but that is NYC. I've lived here 15 years and my civic's bumper got so many nicks I said oh well it's a civic. Now I have an Avant and I use parking armor every single time on the rare occasion I park in the street. I use a huge front bumper license plate foam thing (forgot the company that makes it). that stops people from backing into you. It's not that people don't care, it's that they don't think and are most likely not at all interested in cars as long as they don't break down. NY is not a car friendly town there's just not enough room. I love having a car here but I go to great expense to keep it safe. Park in a back yard lot, don't park on the street, only use it when I have to. You see parking armor and bumper badger's everywhere now. People don't even put them back in the trunk when they drive anymore (lame). That is NY and there is no changing it. You can only protect your car as best you can and be smart about parking. Use a trusted lot (I've had scratches on cars in lots too). Those guys get paid $10 hour you think they are good drivers?

A short story. I was in my newish civic 8 years ago and two young Latino girls were in a new VW behind me. They were both on the cell phones. We were in traffic stopped. She was txting or whatever, then bumped into me and scratched the bumper. I got out to look at the damage. She and her friend started screaming at me for accusing her of damaging my car. "You are going to find out who the F*ck I am" she told me. Forget the apology. I said that's fine let's get the cops. She leaves her car in the middle of downtown traffic and go finds some cops who have the saddest looks on their faces once these girls start screaming at them. The cops came over and looked at the scratch and said "we can't do anything about that it's just a scratch". I said thanks and drove away and I could see in the rear view that the girls were still screaming at the cops in half spanish. I guess they really wanted someone to listen while they told them "who they were".

Another time I came out in the winter and an SUV was parked high on a snow bank and it's hitch was pressed down into my grille. Another time I came out of my rehearsal space in sunset park brooklyn and a recycling truck backed into my civic and did $5,500 worth of damage. 2 mph did that much damage.

NYC. Nice car don't park on the street. Or, just don't mind when it gets banged.
    or.....
put a hitch on the back and put a 3" chrome spike shooting out of the hitch. I've seen this... very effective!

damn dude that sucks. one week after buying my s5, i mean this thing had less than 100 miles on it, and i come out of dropping my kids off at daycare. i was literally in the school for 15 minutes and tried to be courteous by leaving plenty of room to park two cars in the space i took. this is what i walked out to: http://www.a5oc.com/forums/members/c...-porkchop.html i had to get to work, so i was not able to wait for this individual. i then proceeded to kick a massive dent in her passenger side door, break the passenger headlight and spit on the driver's door handle. must have looked funny as hell with me in a pinstripe suit screaming and kicking this person's car. i took pictures of the parking job and space behind her car. i then left a note on the windshield "you parked on my bumper, now i am going to file a claim against your insurance. feck you very much." i contacted my insurance company, gave them her plate, they offered two options, to file a claim with them or try to go after her insurance. i went after her insurance and had an adjuster call me a day later. the dent popped out on its own within that time and i told him not to worry about it. the other driver obviously did not care much about her car or did not notice the damage i did cause i never heard back... one way to solve it.

this is my other method. i was a month out from returning my g37 on lease. i park in a large lot at a shopping center. as i walk out of a store, i see an old pos red mustang try to park in front of my car, hit the bumper hard as hell, see me running and then pull off. i got his plate and called a friend in law enforcement. he provided me with the address of the individual. cop told me the owner was on old guy tho, and a young guy was driving when it hit me. i went to the address provided regardless. rang the bell and an old man came out. i asked if he lent the car to anyone yesterday. he looked at me weird and asked what happened. i told him and he apologized and said his grandson had the car and he would be able to put me in touch with the kid. guy was so nice, i told him not to worry about it. regardless, i had a full respray of the front and rear bumpers shortly thereafter through insurance cause someone stole all four wheels off the car and left it sitting on the floor, so when it was towed onto the flatbed, they got mauled.

Need to print some of these.

My A4 is lowered, so when I park. I try to avoid putting my car in a spot behind any car, because there have been to many instances where they reverse right into my hood. I don't mind the rear bumper getting little nicks and dings from peoples front bumpers. However when i put my new S4 bumper on i will invest in a bumper guard.

I'm thinking about getting a very thick and heavy towing hitch on the rear bumper and make it aim high and as far as it can stick out.
In this way, when someone gets too close to my car, it will damage their bumper, not mine. :P

It's NY. It happens to almost every car on the street sooner or later. Check out this link. Most of the cars I work on in the hamptons from nyc have these in them.

If your damage isnt that bad a little scratch just let the air out of one of his tires or slash it. This way there is no damage to there car. But now there day is going to suck.
