2.0L Recurring CEL - EVAP Leak Detected - Updated with Codes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm posting on behalf of my sister in law's car which keeps getting a CEL for small leak detected - EVAP. The first night she came over for it I figured it was a gas cap thing and I cleared the light and it came back she said a few days later which was probably a few hundred miles driven.

Has anyone dealt with EVAP leak codes that keep coming back? What is usually the next step in diagnosing it?

Definitely sounds like the N80, it's a cheap fix about $20 something at the stealership and you can DIY. Pull it off and if you can blow thru it then it is faulty, you should not be able to.

Hmm.. So test the N80 consensus is?

The one that is weird is "Large leak detected"...

The Large leak for me was caused by the EVAP Purge Valve/N80. it was so bad I couldn't start the car right away after every gas fillup.

    hope this helps.

Crap.. Totally said I'd come back and report the findings... It was indeed the problem replacing the N80 took care of all the codes. When the old one was pulled out I was able to blow through it as some have said that was a way of testing it. The new one I wasn't able to and the car idled better and the codes have been gone since.

Still get the CEL for a P0442 small evap leak. 2 months light comes on, 2 months light goes off without doing anything... Not sure where the evap leak is coming from. As previously mentioned, I changed my N80 valve. Still have the issue.

You might want to check this thread out here:

Might have to delete the evap canister, or replace it.

OK - I'm having the same issue. Car drives 100% the same. I only have 0442 code keep coming up. Initially I had another code, I believe p0441 very small leak - but after clearing it went away. 0442 is persistent and I can't shake it - cleared 3 times already.

I took off the driver side rear wheel fender liner and inspected the hoses and the pump - nothing that i could see as far as loose, or holes etc. I even took some clear silicone and covered the hose that had something just remotely looking like a scratch or something.

I changed the gas cap seal. Brand new seal, and i noticed a thin small springy wire showing up from the side where you put in the pump. It was unusual - I don't think I ever noticed it before but I didn't really look too hard there. What is it for?

I'm getting really frustrated with this. Anybody - please help!

Got my fixed by replacing the N80 and hose. The car runs smoother than before but a slight rough idle at a stop.I replaced the gas cap just in case also.Been 5000km and no code thrown.

I have been throwing the same set of codes.
    P0441 :
    EVAP Emission Contr.Sys.Incorrect Purge Flow
    Fault status : 00100010
    Lower limit exceeded
    Conditions met
    Sporadic
    Warning lamp off

    P0455 :
EVAP Emission Contr.Sys.(Gross Leak) Leak Detected
    Fault status : 01100001
    Upper limit exceeded
    Conditions met
    Static
    Warning lamp off

I will try to replace the N80 first and then go through the rest of the system. Thanks for the info everyone, I'll let you know any updates.
