Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open

Failed my emissions test in VA, as a result...

Have been chasing down this code (the only actual CODE I am getting) - 0413 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open with little results and wanted to solicit the assistance from the pros (you guys). With the help of another member (NyteEscape) we hooked it up to a VAG-COM to see what we could find....

We cleared the codes and the check engine light stayed off but this was still coming up

I am guessing/hoping a vacuum leak is causing me to run rich as my only CODE is the P0413, however I am getting catalyst mon system failure (in Bank 1 sensor 2, which I found out from the OBDII at adv auto) as you can see. Brav (NyteEscape) eluded to the check valves right above/behind the airbox as well. SO I am just trying to figure out what my next course of action should be from here. I have taken a look around and everything looks clamped together tightly and properly. not hearing any air or vacuum sounds, a little clicking sound from that valve above the box but I was under the impression that was normal.

Both my tuner and the mechanic that ran the emissions test pointed at the "0413 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open" as the likely reason for the catalyst mon system failure, telling me to focus my efforts on determining what the issue there is, because the cat mon issue may be remedied by the fix of the secondary air sys.

The "Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A" is the N112 located underneath the intake manifold. Make sure it is plugged in properly. you can also check the resistance across the two terminals on the N112. You should see 27 to 30 Ohms resistance. If you have the correct resistance you will need to check to see that it is getting activated properly. You will have to run a vag-com diagnostic test to see if it is getting a signal and actually opening. Also you can use a LED voltage tester to check from terminal 1 on the wiring harness to ground. Terminal 1 is on the left side with the wire attachment clip pointing up. Briefly operator the starter and you should see the LED light up.

EDIT: Also I forgot to mention be sure to check fuse 34. I doubt it's bad because it also powers up the MAF and the N80 (which you indicated was clicking as it should). But to be thorough you should at least check it.

Thanks Old guy, headed home now to give it a look. Wondering though... would this possibly do damage to the CAT or 02 sensors? Im just curious about the cat mon system failure (even though I've been told to focus on the code specifically)

The SAI system is designed to warm up the catalytic converter as fast as possibly. So if it isn't functioning properly it can lead to premature failure of the cat. However my gut feel is that it would not be a significant reduction.

Ok so the sensor located under intake mani was connected loosely and backwards. Got it back to proper alignment. Now my question is do I need to clear the codes with a Vag-Com for them to clear completely properly?

I ask because I went to get my emissions done this morning and I still get the same reading. The mechanic said you still have check engine light on and are getting a Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open code. I figured he would be able to link up and see the new readings and I'd be good to go?

You need to reset all codes and drive it a few days. Resetting will put all of the readiness codes at"0". The ECM will monitor the functions and reset the readiness after several hot/cold driving cycles.
