    White Smoke Under Hard Acceleration

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Been noticing a large amount of white smoke under hard acceleration. Usually sends out a nice cloud under WOT, but after that, nothing more. I assume this to be condensation that is being blasted out, but figured I'd post it up anyway to see if it could be anything else since I didn't find much in the search. Thanks in advance.

Head gasket? Does your exhaust smell sweet? Is your coolant or oil low?

White smoke is usually condensation, oil smoke has a slight blue tint.

    - Oil consumption does it's usual quart every 1-2K miles.
    - Coolant is full.
    - Motor has fresh Pennzoil Ultra in it.
    - Not sure about the sweet smell. Will have to check that out.

1 qt every 1-2k miles? That sounds like a lot of consumption; I'm <1 qt for 5k miles. What consumption rate range does Audi say is acceptable/within spec?

Audi says a quart every thousand miles is normal...bullshit, basically.

Hm, buddy had this same issue and said the smoke really didn't have a blueish tint. Could be play in the compressor shaft of the turbo.

Usually white smoke is unburn fuel which usually means one of a few things.

-You have a bad injector (leaking when it shoudnt)
-Something like your turbo isnt spooling up right (maybe the spring in the waste gate is saging (or are these electronic))
-Your fuel map is fat on WOT top end

I've always been told that white smoke at WOT is normal. White smoke means the engine is running rich, which i've always heard is normal at WOT. I was told by an ECU tuner that basically when you hit WOT all (or most?) of the sensors are ignored and the ECU just dumps a preset amount of fuel in. This is called "Open Loop" and the ECU also runs in this mode before the engine fully warms up or when a sensor has malfunctioned.

Smoke still occurs sporadically at WOT and there is a sweetish smell to the exhaust. That is interesting about the "open loop" in the map...makes sense.
