    Buying used Turbo?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My K03 is going bad, and I am looking to get into a K04. I am just going with the K04-0015 not getting FT because this is my dd. I am debating on if I should buy a new KKK K04 turbo or a used one I found for sale, I want your opinions on the condition of the used one. They told me there was a very small amount of shaft play. I think i read one time how a little shaft play up and down is ok but in and out means a rebuild. It has 21k miles on it and it is a KKK turbo for around 450$. Do you think I should pick this one up or spend the money for a new one? TIA!

I would just get a used K03 instead and save yourself a few hundred dollars.

Yeah I thought about that to, but it would be nice to have a little more TQ in the low end if I am going to replace the turbo. Here is the link to the K04 turbo that I found for sale. It looks like it was listed in 2009 and he still has it, Should i be worried about it being stored this long with no oil in it?

I've been down the used turbo road and wouldn't recommend it.

IMO there are only 2 ways that it is safe.
1st if you are buying a OEM K03 for around $100.00 you cant go wrong.
2nd if you KNOW the previous owner and the complete history of the turbo.

But spending $450 on a used K04 from someone you don't know.... I personally would discourage.

I would buy a new turbo and call it a day.. As sillysod has been and so have I going the used turbo route will end up costing you more $$. a FT is also very good for a DD (i have one) I haven't had any problems since upgrading.

What tune are you using for the FT? I was just thinking about keeping my 1+ tune and throwing in the K04, I don't think i am going to get the APR k04 file if i do get the K04

So I bought his K04, what do you guys think about driving around on a 1+ tune for a week or two untill i can get out to the tuner? I have found a few people that have done it and had no problems, and a few others that did have problems going into limp mode. Honestly i drive my car very conservatively so i wont be hammering on it at all. But also i drive 80 miles a day for work. TIA again

didnt give mileage was installed in 2009 by the guy he bought car off of, then he replaced it with bt when he bought it. So it is two years old cant be more than 30k i figured.

You shouldnt have any problems on a stage 1+ tune.

Some people just go stage 1+ on a k04, throw on a MBC and call it a day.

I am pretty sure at the high alt that i live at, that it will also help me by lowering the boost pressure? If i understand the relationship between boost and alt correctly? Do you recommend a BC though?

2140ft above sea level if that helps.

I ran a FT on a 1+ for a week or so. No real issues however it would go into limp unless i had the MBC completely unwound, where it still made 12psi.

A plain BW-K04-015 will be a lot less picky. For the most part, my 1+ ran just fine... problems occurred when actual boost over shot requested boost... the car would freak and go limp.

the 1+ file tapers boost back to somewhere around 10psi at 7k. when it fails to see your boost not follow suit, limp happens.

Yeah I got a boost controller, I think that I will install it until I get my tune. Thanks for the info.
