I think the general consensus is to stick with the stock paper (mann) filter. Personally, I bought a k&n shortly after I got my car. I really never noticed any difference.

You should look into the Amsoil Ea air filters.

"Best" can be argued but Amsoil can't be beat from a flow or filtering perspective when it comes to non-oiled filters. I've switched from K&N to Amsoil in my previous cars and currently running one in my A6 and have no complaints.

I've been running a K&N for 120+k miles and there was no power or mpg difference. I just have not had to buy another air filter. If you go this route, make sure you drain the oil real well from the filter so it does not mess up the MAF sensor.

i just switched over to the k&n drop in. noticed power and mpg difference. I dropped it right in and didnt take any oil off. No problems with the maf. Dry flow filters can not flow as much air as oil based filters without sacrificing the filtering part.
