    ignition coil removal... does one need the tool?

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    I planning to change my plugs for the 1st time this weekend. I know there's a specific Audi tool for the removal of the ignition coils Is that really needed, or does carefully pulling them out work OK? Thanks.

    There is a specific tool to remove the CP's. Not necessary tho,as long as you have strong fingers. Just get your fingers under them as best you can and pull them straight up.

    The tool is totally unnecessary. I saw on another forum someone used two zip ties that were looped to get underneath and just pull. I actually did this myself about a week ago and it worked great.

    lol dude unplug the harness'... super easy just look at it and you'll know what to do (finger in between the [=] looking thing and pull down and out)

    CP (coil pack aka ignition coil) will pull right out. Just don't be a little weenie about it, its sealed in... my girlfriend helps me do mine if it means anything... heres a direct quote from her posting on my FB about it just yesterday in fact..

    "Is it weird that i'm excited to take out the old coils from your car and put in these new ones lol? Thanks for teaching me new things :-) can't wait to get my hands dirty ;-)"

    I watched a gut take off his shoe, pull out the lace, loop it under the coil, and pull them all out... It was priceless.
    Anything you can loop under and pull on should do it.

    Schwaben makes one that looks like this.

    Just replaced my plugs today. The coilpacks came out real easy. Toughest part of the whole job was moving the coolant expansion tank out of the way - the rear two parts that stick out and hold it in place were tough to disengage.

    A screwdriver or pick works wonders for popping the coils up too. The tool in the picture you posted is for the VR6s like the 3.2 V6 TTs/A3s or the 3.6 V6 Q7 because those coils are shaped oddly and like to break in half when doing spark plugs.

    This is the correct tool to pull out the ignition coils for these engines and hopefully you are smart enough to pull the small torx screws for the connector brackets because ECS wasn't in the second picture.

    You should only have to replace the coil packs when either the recall is open or they fail. They don't really wear down like spark plugs or other wear items.

    let 'er cool down

    I had mine replaced at the dealer (recalll thanks uncle audi) and they tried to yank the CP's out while i was waiting when the car was hot and one of the CP's tops just popped off. they eventually had to keep it overnight, let it cool and drill it out.
