I would definitely agree that the 4.2 is more rare than the 3.2. It is a solid engine and sounds great. If you can get it for a fair price, go for it.

Are production numbers by model year listed somewhere on the forum? If not, does anyone know how many S6s were brought into the US in 2007 and how many in brilliant red?

u will miss the sound for sure
u will miss the bit higher power @ low/mid range torque
prob be less confident @ higher speed maneuvers merging, switching lanes, ETC

    its peppiness will impress u
it may make u feel like ur in a different and smaller car

    u will not be alone

Here is the Manheim Market Report for 2005 & 2006 4.2 A6's sold at auction in U.S. If you're shopping dealers this may be able to give you an idea of what range price they own it for.

05 and 06 4.2 A6's have the timing chain engine from the 04-08 S4. Look through some threads in the B6/7 S4 forum and then decide if you want this motor. It can be a costly one if something goes wrong. If you do plan on buying one, a comrpession and leakdown test is an absolute MUST. Scored cylinder walls are more and more common on these motors and it leads to their death. They start buring crazy amounts of oil then it's game over. Also be aware of the timing chain system and the service it may need. If the motor was taken care of, it should be fine over-all. taken care of for this motor means oil changes AT LEAST every 5000 miles. If you start it and hear a rattle for more then a few seconds, walk away. A timing chain tensioner and guide service on this motor is 3000 in parts plus whaver labor would be if you are not doing this yourself.

It really is a great motor and I have no issues with mine in my 90k S4 and I beat the living shit out of it every day. Just look through the S4 forum and make yourself aware of the possible issues.

I contacted AOA a few years back and they provided me with the information. I just pasted it right out of their email response.

I like my 3.2. The difference between the sound is night and day though. There is a ton more maintenance on the 4.2 I have heard though, including timing chain, etc. If you can afford it, go for it!

Maintenance is the same as the 3.2... Well besides the oil of course, you will pay a little more when getting an oil change. I had a '05 A6 3.2 and traded it in for a '06 A6 4.2 and the 4.2 is worth it, both have a timing chain which the dealer has told me you would never need to change!!!

The timing chain needs to be serviced every 120k or so on MPI 4.2's found in S4's and some A6's. Service is about 3k for parts and another 3k for labor. Motor has to come out

Back in oct. 2010, I traded my 05 4.2 in for an 09 3.0T. At first, I missed the low end grunt of the V8, but 3.0 does feel faster especially when you hit the supercharged powerband. The gas mileage on the 3.0 is better (25 mpg on the freeway @ 80) so it is worth losing the low end grunt. I hate to say it, but I like my 09 a little better.

The 4.2 is much more rarer then the 3.2 (dime a dozen). The engine sounds amazing. That price is a steal for what you get. Go buy it and enjoy if you can afford it.

4.2 is hard to find but they are out there.. Take your time and don't settle for something you won't be happy with.. It took me 4 1/2 months to find my 05 4.2 A6 but it was exactly the way I wanted it, lucky for me it had one owner, guy owns porsches and took great care of the car it was mint.. Got it for 21,500$ with 52K on it (he traded it in for a A8 W12!) .. Silver on black interior, s-line, cold weather, technology package ect.. Love the 4.2 did a 90$ muffler delete and kept the stock tips and the car sounds amazing.. I get alot of attention with it when I get on the gas b/c most A6s are 3.2 and don't sound like the V8.. I previously owned a stage 3 B5 S4 I do miss the power and sound of the turbo but the growl of a V8 turns the chicks on let me tell you! And I also enjoy not getting pulled over every week for exhaust ect.. Take your time, do your research and go for the V8.. Best of luck to you
