A/C cold when car is moving, warm at a standstill???

just noticed this tonight as I was sitting in traffic. A/C works perfect when the car is moving but comes out warm when the car is at rest. Any thoughts?

the movment of air through the condensor is why your getting cold air and warm at rest. check refrigerant level first and go from there.

Make sure your fans are working properly. Otherwise, this may just be a symptom of the design. I haven't noticed this in my B6 however my B5.5 Passat wagon was guilty of this, especially in 100+ temps.

Your auxiliary fan might not work or spin at the high speed.

Mine does the same thing. It blows the same but the temp is different at a stop light vs moving. But its 100° plus here.

How can you tell the fans aren't working? Should they be spinning at idle w/A/C on?

Um....What? My AC blows like a blizzard. If your a4 doesn't have good ac, its probably because something isn't working. Not because all a4s have bad AC

also having this problem...and it seems like the passenger side is warmer that the driver side. The car will throw a code ( NOT CEL) for a malfunctioning fan control module, correct?

its probably low on charge. Bring it to a shop and have check the charge. Also make sure when using your A/C to have it in recirculation mode for max A/C. And don't use the stuff from the parts store with the sealers and crap in it.

    congrats??

im speaking out of personal experience. I have a few friends with A4's and 9 out of ten dont blow that cold. I cant speak for anyone in ACE, but i realize that not ALL audis dont have good AC. i never siad that so dont put words in my mouth. i said every audi i have even been in. I dont think i have sat in every audi in the world.

My car does the same. When its moving even in summer, it blows super cool air but when its idle, its only like a fan. not sure why, but the ac seems to work only while in motion

Maybe it's because your belts (serpentine) isn't spinning as fast at idle (engine speed)? That makes the most sense.

Would almost put money on low refrigerant. Every car I have had this is what happens when the refrigerant starts getting low. Top it off and you will be g2g

Low coolant also make sense since the coolant lubricate the seal and seals leak over time.

these symptoms are common for a compromised cooling system.
Ideally, you need to hook up the vag com or obdII reader to see your exact engine temps during these events while driving.

It could be that you are overheating and hitting the A/C cutoff. Once moving, enough air flows to cool down the motor and A/C will kick back on.

The problem is a weak fan clutch (on cars w/ clutches) or broken/faulty electric fan(s) (on cars w/o clutches).
It could also be a old radiator, old coolant, etc.

    A/C system-
    low/high pressure readings are needed
    condenser may be freezing up
check your drain to make sure it's not clogged- A/C on, you should see it dripping water from the drain after a short time.
