One of Sparkplugs - What are you running?- Do NOT buy Auto-Lite

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Everything started when I bought my Stage 3, the thing was missing like crazy under boost, the misfires gradually got worse, when I got home I was determined to fix the issue and decided I would start with plugs, I bought some NGK BKR7E (4644) and these fixed all my misfiring issues. After 1000 miles or so the misfires came back due to my valve covers being leaky and messing up my plugs, oh well, ordered some valve cover gaskets from ECS and bought some new sparkplugs, this time I had to go with Auto-Lite (same model as the previous NGK's but just different brand), for 100 miles the car run great (no leaky valve covers anymore) but then my engine developed a very loud ticking sound.

After a lot of work and $$$ trying to figure out where this ticking was coming from my car started missing bad, to the point where I couldn't even drive it, scanned it with VAG-COM and got 2 codes, multiple/random cylinder misfire and Cylinder 3 misfire so I went ahead and pulled the cylinder 3 plug and there it was the (2nd broken Auto-Lite plug in less than a day) Auto-Lite sparkplug, the thing had no gap and the electrode was spinning freely from the rest of the sparkplug (hard to picture, I know) either way, this is what was causing my ticking sound, I must say this was the second Auto-Lite plug that had ''broken'' on me after 1 day!!!

    DO NOT BUY AUTO-LITE

Yesterday, I went to the store and got some NGK's BKR7E's again (1 step colder than stock) I'm running 25 psi and I haven't had any issue so far.

Guys, post up what kind of plugs you're running and what you have them gaped to.

NGK BKR7E's are the best... I've spent weeks tracking down misfires when in the end they were just from shitty plugs... even if they were new autolites and even bosch plugs. I will only run NGK plugs now

My car had horrible misfires under high boost and i pulled the plugs and they were autolite iridiums of which two were gapped to above .050 and the rest were all at .041 absolutely ridiculous bought some of the bkr7e's gapped to .028 and now there is no problem. Oh joaquin after replacing these the car boosts to 21 and holds 18 so when it was misfiring it caused my boost to spike or the gauge to malfunction, also i believe the limp mode at high rpm thing went away i only pulled 2nd up to 6,800 though maybe it will happen in 3rd or 4th not sure

Alright bud, no worries, if the issue is still there after you replace for the second time your TB boot I will take care of it.

I didn't want to buy then but I had to, at least until the next day, it was auto lite or crazy misfire gradually getting worse.

No fram oil filters though, Mobil 1 or Bosch ;)

And make sure you don't have any side to side torque when tightening down the plugs. This will put a hairline crack in one in a heartbeat, and it may not be apparent until later. I had autolite plugs in my stage three for about six months, ran good and hard at the track with no misfire issues period. I've since then switched to the sidefires and back to the NGK's, for no other reason than that is the plug of choice with these cars....

I've had horrible luck with Bosch platinum plugs in boosted cars. But I've had great results with Auto Lite platinums and double platinums. I even used standard autolite copper plugs in a boosted car that was also using nitrous. I think I will go with the NGK's for the S4 though when I replace them soon.

I have only had good experiences with the Bosch F5DPOR side fire plugs in my stage 3 1993 UrS4 and in my stage 3+ 2001 S4. In fact, that is all I feel confident in using. I think I will try the NGK's next time just for reference as I've heard good things about them as well. But seriously, Autolites?? Do yourself a favor and use OEM filters for oil and air, everything else is just subpar IMO.

Auto parts usually have them. Order them through their part number (which can be found on google).

Advanced Auto Parts, when you ask them, tell them to look for NGK 4644

Thanks. I will need to do them this weekend. My car is bucking under boost and backfires when I let off. I drive like a grandpa right now. Funny thing is I don't have and cylinder misfire codes though? Its fine at lower boost but on higher boost it just feels flat and breaks up. Typical plug symptoms in every boosted car I've owned. We'll see if the NGK's do the trick. I need my power back!
