    State Inspection Question on TPMS

Anyone knows if a 2008 vehicle should be ok passing state inspection without TPMS sensors? I do have them in my 18" wheels but I refuse to spend $400 on sensors for 2.5 months a year in my summer wheel set. I am in New York State by the way. The TPMS malfunction signal is obvious in dashboard though..

I'm from new york as well, i believe they only check for emissions and safety and the check engine light. I can't imagine you failing due to tpms sensors.

From the NY State DMV brochure it does not appear that the TPMS warning indicator would be an issue - see: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/broch/c-50.htm The presence of dashboard warning lights is not specifilly mentioned as cause for rejection. However, I suggest you call a private inspection station and ask.

Why do you run summer tires only 2.5 months a year? Even in far upstate NY you should be able to run them at least from early May to early October.

June July August are only months I run on Summer wheels/tires. All seasons 18" for the rest of the year just in case. Where I live.. weather shifts so abruptly and so brutal without notice that you don't want to be caught off guard.

I'm actually a NYS certified vehicle inspector. I'm not in the business anymore, but I maintain my certification so that I can perform my own inspections. Currently, state inspection laws will not cause a vehicle to fail for anything related to TPMS. If they are inoperative or missing, the vehicle will still pass the inspection.

Thanks for input, can you still make a living performing inspections on your own? or do you need a shop?

No, I used to perform inspections when I worked as a tech. I'm no longer in the business, but since I maintain my certification, I can perform the inspections on my own vehicles.

These days, I only work on cars for fun...not to make money.
