1.8T Front Crank Oil Seal Housing

I've started building my motor up, and i installed this oil seal housing with RTV silicone.

I've since noticed that its supposed to actually have a gasket on it.

Has anyone successfully used RTV here? Or should i pull it back off and fit the correct audi gasket?

    Cheers
    Kev

i used a gasket and rtv.. i have heard of people having problems with it leaking with just the gasket.. i would take it out and replace the gasket then use rtv for the extra 'insurance'.. but who knows.. u might get away with it as long as u did a good job and the seal itself is in good condition..

You should definitely use a gasket on the front crank shaft seal. When you install the gasket you should not operate it for 4 hours to allow the seal to form around the crank shaft.

    We have them available below.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jason its not that seal i'm talking about, i've already replaced that with a new reinz seal.

Its one of the "U" shaped paper gaskets in this image that i have missed out:

I've gone and ordered them from the dealer today, was ordering some other parts anyway.

    Cheers folks!

Ohh that gasket, I was thrown off a little by the title of the thread. I've heard mixed opinions on that. Some people just use RTV, others just the gasket, or a Combo of both. Not sure which way works the best, but if it were me I'd go with the combo of RTV and the gasket.

    Reviving this thread... sorry...

I have rebuilt my 1.8t ATW - and it's leaking oil somewhere from the front of the motor.
I have already replaced all 3 front seal (cam, intermediate shaft, and crank) - but the engine still leaks.
Seems the only thing left (it's the head the gasket :-)) is that U-shape gasket behind the front crankshaft seal housing - the gasket mentioned here.
So I'm curious - what stopped your leak?
    - gasket
    - RTV
    - or both
I know mine was a dry gasket (no RTV) when I took it apart - but maybe that was "factory luck" :-)
    Thanks for the help.
