Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I went to check a 2004 e46 convertible for my wife today and the car looks good and everything but the odometer reads 65k but is something wrong with the title says 0 miles.
Do anyone has any idea on this?
    thanks

Is the car a one owner? It may show 0 miles on the title because that is what the mileage was when it was bought brand new and registered. The title is going to list the mileage of the last time the vehicle was registered which could have been when it was originally taken off the showroom floor.

That's why it says 0 miles.

When he first got the title, the car was brand new. It hasn't changed owners so there's no reason for a new title.

Ummmm... no car is ever sold with "0" miles. Almost every car imported from overseas will have 3-6 miles on the odometer from driving off the line, through a QC check, into storage lots, on and off the boat... you get the picture. Even the domestics will have 3 or so. Do some more checking, take it to a reputable shop for a thorough inspection and do some checking on the title yourself. Everything may check out OK, and the original selling dealer(or the motor vehicle department) put the incorrect mileage on the title application when the car was first sold. I would check into it more before buying(without an unconditional money-back guarantee), "0" miles just doesn't seem kosher.

Who cares if the title said 0 miles or 30 miles in all honesty it doesn't matter.

It would be bad if it was the other way around hehehe. Traceability was probably lost at the DMV when the title was made, so as long as you can get a new title i don't see how this would affect you.

If it is merely a paperwork error, then you are 100% right that it does not matter in the least. Mistakes happen and hopefully that is all this is; but the fact that it says 0 is cause for looking further into things. I've worked in the automotive industry for too long; a 0 mile title is a red flag... the OP is right to be concerned. There are too many scammers and junk dealers in this industry to proceed without further research and confirmation.

I just got my new title for my '89 BMW. The milage on the title says "0000000". I had the correct milage on the bill of sale. For model is also says "33". Pretty sure BMW never made a "33". But the vin is correct and it does say BMW. The people at the DOL are idiots.

i have PDI'd many cars with 0 miles on them. Now, when you do a PDI youre supposed to test drive the car at least 5 miles...BUT some techs dont always do that. so theres a chance it really was baught with 0 miles.

    fyi, PDI = Pre-Delivery Inspection.

Glad you caught that one. Still has nothing to do with the title though. You will not find accurate information on a piece a paper that is rarely used. There is no point in even having odo on the title.

True, but if the odo has 65K on it and it is CARFAX is showing 205K huge differance...

What are you talking about? Carfax is the only reason he found out it has 205k...the odometer is wrong and the seller is trying to sell it as a 65k mile car.

Is anyone actually reading threads anymore...?

It is. but regardless of the correct milage, the title wouldnt show it. If it showed any milage at all it would show the milage of when the car was issued a new title. Here in washington, no one goes and checks the odo for the new title, so they leave it as 00000 in the field. At least that is the way it is from my experience's with the DOL. The only way to tell there has been a roll back is to keep track throughout the years which carfax does.

Quote Originally Posted by msharifi View Post

Either that, or it was recoded. Since it was an E46 (digital odo), the cluster could have been hacked like some guys can now do with the B6 cluster.

a simple visual inspection (seat wear, e-brake handle, shifter, brake and gas pedals) and test drive will be able to determine if there is 65k or 205k. a 100k+ difference should be pretty obvious. carfax is not always accurate, and might not have an updated record, and/or somebody may have added an extra zero and it was really supposed to be 20,500 miles. but obviously go with your gut, clearly you probably thought something fishy was up if you posted on here about it............

true...it can help us with the mileage though, but even 205k is not accurate coz may be that was the last time it was checked by a certified mechanic. it can be more than that!

Do you trust the certified Mechanic that inputted the milage correctly? You can't trust Carfax 100% there are errors left and right when the inputting is on human hands.

And I'm Carfax has plenty of automated and manual controls in place to catch those errors before they hit the actual report. I am sure there is a detection system to recognize when a car goes from having only 19,000 miles to 205,000 in one year. The error (fat thumbing a keyboard) would be caught easily before you see it.

This isn't always true. My USP was purchased by me as a CPO with 47k on the ticker, and my '03 with 110k had a nicer interior than this thing. I know what ya mean though.

    thanks
I recently bought an older car in Washington State with 93,000 miles and received the new title in the mail. The odometer mileage on the title is 0000000 and under odometer status it says "E". In a panic, I contacted the Washington State DOL. Here is the response they gave me:

This means that your vehicle is over 10 years old, and it does not require an Odometer Disclosure statement. The “E” means “exempt.”
