Engine oil question for service... Castrol Syntec 5w-40 or Castrol EDGE 5w40 ????

Been on the forums for about 3 years but hardly need yo post, as most of the info is there. Please link in ur comments the page if this thread exists.

Q: Can we use Castrol Edge 5w40 on our b7 a4 2.0t? I know we normally use Castrol Syntec 5w-40, which is about $8 a quart. Autozone has a sale where for $30 you get 5 quarts of EDGE 5w40 with a bosch filter (sell the filter online) 30 bucks for five quarts is quite the deal. The guy there said edge was better than Syntec and work on the audi, is this true?

Castrol motor oil is a Group III hydrocracked mineral oil that is now commonly being called synthetic. What you want is a Group IV PAO's and other synthetics along with synthetic additives that contain diluents for your B7A4.

I've read that the Edge is apparently Castrol's most recent version of its synthetic oil, but that the Edge version is not yet approved by VW/Audi. I forget where i read this, but maybe it's at the Castrol website? I think i'm remembering this correctly.

Edge is supposed to just be a new name for Syntec. That's what I was told when I went into Advance to see about some. But since the 5w40 doesn't sell very quickly, it was still syntec on the shelf, so I didn't get to turn an Edge bottle around and see if it said it was VW/Audi approved.

Take a look at FAQ #10 at this link. Looks like that if Edge is actually now available in 5W-40, then it is approved by VW and you're good to go with it. Good luck.
