How to program your Audi flip key fob.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have done a ton of searching and found how to accurately program a key fob on the forums. The problem with all the directions that I had found was that once I programmed one key fob, the others would erase. None of the directions showed all the steps to program more than one key correctly without losing the others (which most people will have). This DIY has the correct programing procedure no matter how many fobs you have.

For some reason if you pull your battery or you change the battery in your fob you might be finding a situation where you need to do this programming.

There are two kinds of programming. If you have remotes that have been programmed to the car previously the steps are easy. There are longer steps if the keys are new and those are the secondary ones.

Steps to reprogram keys to a car they are already linked to:
    1. Press and hold the unlock key on a remote
    2. Insert key in ignition and turn to on (while still holding unlock)
    3. Hold unlock while in the on position for 2 seconds
    4. Turn key to off, remove from ignition and release button.

Do this for each remote. Relink to seat positions (press and hold mem position #, then unlock button for 2 seconds and release both) and done.

To program new remotes on a car never linked to previously:

    1. Take a key (valet key works best, put it into the ignition and turn the key to the "on" position, so the dashboard lights come on.
    2. Roll down the driver's side window (not required, but a good idea in case there's a problem).
    3. Exit the car and close the door.
    4. With a second key, physically lock the doors by turning the key clockwise (don't use a remote).
    5. Take the first remote to be programmed, press the unlock button. The lights will flash once.
    6. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. That first transmitter is now programmed.

***If you have only one key skip to step 16. Otherwise continue to step 7.***

    7. Lock the door again (physically) with the key, (not the remote) by turning clockwise.
    8. Press the unlock button two times with a one second interval in between, the lights will flash with each button press for a total of two flashes.
    9. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. The second transmitter is now programmed.

***If you have three keys proceed to step 10. Otherwise skip to step 16.***

    10. Lock the door again (physically) with the key, (not the remote) by turning clockwise.
    11. Press the unlock button three times with a one second interval in between, the lights will flash with each button press for a total of three flashes.
    12. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. The third transmitter is now programmed.

***If you have four keys proceed to step 13. Otherwise skip to step 16.***

    13. Lock the door again (physically) with the key, (not the remote) by turning clockwise.
    14. Press the unlock button four times with a one second interval in between, the lights will flash with each button press for a total of four flashes.
    15. Wait 10 seconds and press the unlock button. The doors should unlock. The fourth transmitter is now programmed.

    16. Remove the key from the ignition.

Make sure that to test the newly program remotes, the original key is removed from the ignition since this exits the programming process. Someone might be a bit frustrated trying to test it with it still in 'program' mode.

I had some diffuculty accessing the programming mode. If it doesnt work then take the key out of the ignition and start over. Rinse lather repeat. It will go eventually.

If you are still having problems after trying it more times than you can count, check the key is right one for year of car or that the key and battery are good.

It only programs the key fob. The immobilizer chip must be programmed at the dealer.

my local dealer claimed they can't actually cut keys and must order direct from audi for retarded money.
but this place can do it for cheap money; had 3 blanks from ebay cut today by Mark there for under a benjamin.
glance over the site to see your options; you need not be local.

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but it's a start :)
I am set on to make my entry in my audi possible with my phone, and now I have the note 3 which had an Ir blaster, so I am thinking I am closer, but still far...
Any one with hints or thoughts?

I tried the technique for both original keys that lost the remote lock/unlock capability. It worked right away with one; the second one won't register. Any thoughts? B7 RS4. Thanks!

Why woulld you think the keys use IR? They use a commoin radio freq,

The Audi remote function does not use IR, it uses a radio frequency signal from the remote to activate the lock/unlock and other remote functions. I do not believe any cell phone will transmit a RF signal, of the required modulation and frequency needed to activate the remote key functions.

On both my b5 s4 and b6 a4 all I had to do is lock the door with the key and then unlock and wait till the windows roll down.

Worked like a charm for my 2002 S6

I picked up one of those $17.00 fobs from eBay and had it cut at a local hardware store that had recently installed one of the new key cutting machines (thanks Romie). Anyways, as I already had my two original fobs and the valet key, I opted for the "***If you have three keys proceed to step 10. Otherwise skip to step 16.***" option, which turned out to be the correct one. Just pressed the UNLOCK button three times (in one second intervals), waited the 10 seconds, pressed UNLOCK again, and voila!, it is working! You just have to remember to turn off the ignition key inside of the car before attempting to use the newly programmed remote. Thanks for the great info "diaftia" , I was under the impression that I had to use my VagCom for this procedure. Appreciated!!! Thanks, Paul

Quick Question regarding the programming of the immobilizer chip within the remotes.

For the sake of installing a remote starter with the 556u immobilizer bypass used by viper alarms, Could one purchase just the chip used within the remote? Rather than an entire remote?

I believe it is called the id48 transponder immobilizer chip. easily found on ebay. Is this the chip inside the b7 flip key case?

When bypassing the immobilizer one must use a key for the purpose of the chip by disassembling it and housing it within the until that works with the remote starter (556u bypass).
Could one purchase a chip and have it programmed instead of the entire remote? I don't see why not. This would save many remote start guys the trouble and cost of getting an entire key. .

    Looking for some confirmation.

Here is an ebay post for the chip alone for less than six dollars.

So I guess the chip can be pried from the valet key for use in a bypass module*

Are the turn signal lights on the dash suppose to blink? I did this and they blinked but my remote unlock/lock functions still didn't work. Am I missing something or is there another issue?

I am also trying this to work, I obtained a used FOB with blank key, then cut the blank and that part now Works.
Before I take it to the dealer to program the immobilizer, I wanted to get the remote lock/unlock part, but I am stuck when pressing the "unlock" button with the key on the door, nothing happens.

I am reading the numeric data on both keys, the *new* one and the one that I have here and are almost identical:

    "New":
    06 575 600 22S
    8e0 837 220 Q
    433MHz

    My current key:
    06 575 600 23S
    8e0 837 220 Q
    433MHz

My understanding is that the remote lock/unlock is independent from the immobilizer thing that needs to be done at the dealer... any clues?

I have read through this thread, but I want to be certain this can be done.
If I were to find/buy a used key with the same FCC-ID and PN, would this work on my 2006 A4 B7 using OP's guide?

Last year I bought a 2003 TT. It had 2 FOBs. Neither worked and I used the OPs directions and I was able to program both. Over the winter the car sat and the battery wend dead. I had to jump start the car and had to enter my radio code to get the radio working again. Neither of my FOBs work now and I've tried and tried not only the OPs directions but some variations that I found on line as well. Not luck with any of them. I can lock and unlock the car manually with my FOBs and when I lock it, the horn beeps like it does when I used to use the FOBs. Lock & unlock buttons on the console also are working normally.

Is there anything else I might need to do since the battery went dead?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've unplugged my central locking pump, then plugged it back in. It took the remote out of memory as it no longer works. I've tried both of the techniques and nothing works. I'd like it to start working again. Been almost 2 years.

I'm still fighting with mine. I saw somewhere a vague comment about using VAGCOM to reset something on the remote. I haven't had a chance to do any more research from that angle.

Do you have the directions for the vagcom? I haven't had a chance to search for any. I'd love to try what you did and see what happens.

Just bought a new b7 key fob thinking all I had to do was do the above programming sequence for new keys but now the key turns the car into safe mode... It does start it but then it turns it self off. I do have the car opening and closing but how do I get the safe error to go away?

I see I have to program the immobilizer chip now... Wish I knew this going forward thought all my expense was the 140 dollar key.
Op great diy but would recommend adding the info about immobilizer for the lazy readers like me who only read the first post and a handful of others.

yes, the OP kind enough to share his knowledge should certainly take some more of his valuable time years later for folks too frigging lazy to bother to read an entire post about something they want to learn.
