Radio Sirius ...LINKING

For the last 4-6 weeks, the MMI "Radio Sirius" radio my 2007 A6 4.2 seems to spending quite a bit more time LINKING than it has in the past. Strangely, this seems to happen most locally in northeast Ohio, and not while traveling to other parts of the state. I can lose a signal while standing still, so I don't think it is a loose wire to the antennae.

Anyone else with this issue?

Having just switched fro a 2006 A6 with XM to a 2008 A6 with Sirius I can definitively say that the Sirius radio looses signal and goes into LINKING mode much more often than the XM radio. That having been said it is reasonably reliable and the outages are usually pretty short (say 5 seconds).

Mine is acting the same way. I used to have approx 8 seconds delay to help but that seems to have diminished. If i go under a bridge 4 seconds later the signal goes off for split second. I thought it might be a loose cable so ive been trying to isolate the behavior but could not get any correlation. lately it suffers when travelling SW * im in south jersey. I have been in cars with XM and they get reception in parking garages!! * 3rd floor of 6 floors 15 feet from the side. I was amazed.

I am in North NJ and even with a clear sky it happens. I live 1300ft above sea level and this only used to happen on my A4 with xm when i went under railroad tracks, but with sirius it happens a lot.

i tried calling sirius looking for an explanation and they told me that XM and Sirius are two different platforms there might be a problem with the tuner in my car, which i dont think its true.

i've been looking on the web and it seems to be that there are some devices to improve the reception but i dont want to mess with that. has anyone here tried it?

I find it interesting that this issue only started recently for me. At first I thought it might be weather related, but the symptoms did not appear last year. Bumps don't seem to make a difference (I can lose a signal sitting at a traffic light), so I've pretty much ruled out a loose connection.

I thought that Sirius and XM are one and the same now. (All the adds say "Sirius XM" and I get channels from both on my subscription).

Yup, they are both owned by 1 company now.

As far as the issue goes, on my '11 A6 I haven't had any issues with the radio except when I go into parking garages I lose signal...but from time to time when I am in a highly dense area, my speakers will give off a "booop" sound, lose reception for a second, and then back to normal.

they are the same company and have merge in few areas ... commercials/ advertising / programming etc but the that doesn't mean the platforms technologies have merge or atleast no backward compatibility w frequencies and hardware...meaning if we have an older Sirius unit maybe it may never utilize certain XM transmission frequencies /satellites ... im assuming any hardware manufactured after the merger should not have these issues.

reviving this thread to help others

i was having terrible issues with reception
i called SiriusXM tech support and told them how my reception was behaving
they werent very helpful...gave me a default response of go see the dealer

ran VCDS scans...inspected my antenna *found water damage etc

bought a replacement antenna
bought a XM unit as back up

installed both called Sirius XM to update radio Serial #s and resend activation signal

signal was great and the sound even sounded more vivid nicer highs enriched bass etc
now i got curious... was it the antenna or the XM unit in the trunk??
i put back my old antenna and the reception is still great!...guess they are more durable then i expected

this makes me loose more respect for SiriusXM... they must be making changes using certain Sirius satellites less or something and not communicating it

so basically if you have a Sirius unit not a SiriusXM unit...one built before the merger and are having issues... i would say suspect the Sirius unit in the trunk before suspecting the antenna.

it means an easier physical install... only in trunk and not dealing with interior head liners etc... but involves calling SiriusXM with activation wich sucks
