Advice on how to mount a GoPro...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just bought my GoPro and was looking for a way to mount it without using adhesives, etc. Found the 'roll bar mount' accessory that can easily been attached to the front grille. See the picture below (I'll leave the roll bar mount permanently in place) and an example of a short sequence I shot this afternoon.

Sick! I just got one myself for my trip to Europe to pick the car up. Is that the supercharger picking up that sounds like an eagle scream when you downshift at :08? It definitely is the noise that builds at the end...So badass.

All supercharger sound indeed (quick heel toe downshift at :08 then accelerating). I need to figure out something to capture the sound of the exhaust at the same time...

The suction cup mount allows a variety of choices. Inside on the sun roof, front or backwards, on the hood, on the trunk, on the side.
If you feel like being bored with 7 and a half minutes of various mounts (hand held canon HD camera, and the gopro HD) then watch this.

If you get crazy they just released their 3D where it allows 2 GoPros in a single case capturing side by side and editing software for 3D :)

Right. I don't completely trust the suction cup in case of spirited driving though, but will surely use it too.

Yeah for the 3d case and included software and mounting stuff. The cameras that you put in the case, however, are sold separately.

Anyone have experience with the add on Battery BacPac? So far I've only been able to get the mic on the camera to work properly without the BacPac attached. When I have the BacPac on, the sound I get from videos is just a strange, digital noise, like there's a switch that gets thrown that says not to record audio. Too bad; I wanted to have it on the camera but I may end up just using it as a backup battery to charge in the car while the other one's in the camera shooting.

No, takes 2 minutes and fits pretty well (you can use a bit of 3M double side tape if you want to make it real snug). The only (very slightly) difficult part is to get behind the grille with you fingers to turn the screws.

Was originally specific to S4 B8 and how to fit the GoPro on the grille... but you can never tell where it will end...

That is a really cool angle. I may have to try something like that. Be careful with the suction cup. I had it fall off of a go kart on me and it wasn't damaged but falling off of a car could be worse.

I'm still experimenting on where to mount mine inside the car. I tried the obvious with the suction cup on the sunroof but somewhat unimpressed with the result. The rearview mirror blocks most of the view (expected).

I also tried to lengthen the mount to bring the camera down but it provided very little improvements and also added extra shake when going over bumps.

I will have an instructor on the passenger seat during the events so I can't really strap it to the seat. Still have not found the ideal place. Maybe I can custom fab a mount to mount it just above the arm rest.

I've also tried to experiment with recording formats. What's the recomended recomendation for in-car recording? This pic of the vid was r2.

BTW: I still think this thread is B8 specific as we are trying to find a B8 location to best mount the GoPro.

Which suction cup mount do you have? I have the ChaseCam suction cup mount with an extension, http://www.chasecam.com/mount/suction/SM31, and it works perfect for me. However, I'm not using a GoPro. I'm using a Drift Innovation HD170 cam. Here's a video of one lap at SOW in my B8 S4.

I don't have a GoPro, but i mount my point & shoot on my rear passenger window with a suction cup mount. I'm also using a Chasecam mount since i'm pretty friendly with the owner of the company

I've used the suction cup on track days on two different sport bikes, and mounted on the side of the S4 also. I always put a bit of spit on the clean surface I'm going to apply the suction cup to. The only time it fell off was when my son put a sport bike into the armco at considerable speed. The case was finished but the camera worked fine. My son only had a broken collarbone, thankfully.

    Great video!
We always use the suction cup mount when we make our vids with a go pro. We use them in the race cars, street cars, etc. and often mount them on the exterior of the vehicle.

We've lost a couple of mounts that way but never an actual camera. The case seems to hold up pretty well keeping the camera safe as seen at the end of this vid at around 2.47:

Still using that camera, had to buy a new case and mount.

on a side note, if you want a very high end camera system for your car, www.chasecam.com is the way to go. They're mandatory equipment in SPEED World Challenge cars and also used by various F1 teams (McLaren i definitely know use them), Indy, IMSA, military, NASA, Jay Leno, etc since the systems are able to withstand very high G-forces. And yes they will be a lot more expensive than GoPro

In an effort to better position and understand video size and angle, I created this chart.

Of cource, the battery will run out before the card is full unless it's hard wired. I'm going to attempt to have it mounted lower and repeat the process. I have to assume that if I capture more of the outside the filesize will increase and it will shorten the video lenght. Having a black bar (roof of car) in the frame allows for a great deal of compression.

Also to note, the r3 at 60fps did cause the temp display to flicker (as expected I supose).

Maybe this helps others trying to mount their GoPro.
