Exclamation Need to remove MMI Buttons - HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

I accidently spilled pop all over my MMI buttons, and now they hardly move.. I need to somehow clean them. I pulled the spinner off and got that, but the buttons directly beside it are still unmovable. Can someone give me directions on how to remove the buttons and/or trim to clean the buttons? The pop is built up all around them.

Here's what my MMI looks like.

    1) Pull upward the leather around the shifter. Don't be shy to use a little force.
    2) Carefully pick around the silver trim until it comes off.
    3) Pull upward the entire MMI unit.
    4) Disconnect two plugs.
    5) Unscrew 4 screws on the bottom of the unit.
6)Take it apart; use rubbing alcohol, q-tips, and magnifying lens.

For all the rubber parts inside, you can wash them under warm water with soap.

Once you have cleaned everything thoroughly, let it dry for few hours before reinstalling.

Well I got the gear shifter apart. But the aluminum trim I can't. There's clips in there I can't seem
To maneuver without bending or putting dents in it.

Pull up the shifter leather, disconnect the shifter indicator, and then pull off the entire panel with the wood. That should work.

yes place your hands in the area where the shifter sits and pull the whole panel upwards with little force. It will snap right out. This is how it worked for me on the Q7, I can't imagine it being much different on the A6. Once you pull the shifter cover up, look inside see if there are any screws that hold the MMI into place.

I recommend that you purchase the Bentley manual for the car. It will pay for itself many times over.

Does the Bentley manual show pictures and diagrams in it? And do places such as ebay or other sites sell them used for a reduced rate?

I followed the above instructions and took it apart, pretty easy for the amount of steps it had. However i got stuck where i have to take off the rear center arm rest and rear ac controls. The MMI came loose after i took off the front ac module, front ashtray and the side plastic covers. Any body know what i have to do next?

I still couldnt complete what I started, couldnt take off the front center console. Otherwise everything came apart. Its better to invest in a bentley manual.

ok so i have done this about 30-40 times already with the same concern of the sticky mmi buttons... do this at your own risk but lightly spray some aerosol glass cleaner on the affected buttons first, then basically start moving the buttons/ pushing buttons untill it frees up a little, then a little shot of some compressed air gently on the cracks of the buttons to evaporate any leftover glass cleaner. This has worked many times for me, but some times it may take a couple tries to completely get the buttons to move freely.
hope that helps. it may not be the perfect way to do it, but its worth a shot. Its either that or take the whole console out.

Isn't there a way to just use some type of suction cup to pull the buttons out one by one?

reviving an old thread because its a common problem and this thread shows up in searches

    * the MMI Interface unit or pieces of it can not be popped up... (maybe in othe models but NOT C6) ...just the power/volume nob COVER and maybe large nob COVER.
    * the buttons can not be purchased new separately.
    * the dealer recommends swapping out the MMI Interface unit as a whole.
    * you can attempt to dissect the unit and give it a good cleaning but that requires removing the center console which requires removing arm rest and Climatronic unit.
