Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just got called by my dealership an hour ago that there is a recall on my 2010 S4's Thermostat. I'm coming in on Monday to get it replaced. Anyone else get this?

I got the same call from Rector, Barry. Taking mine in Monday afternoon. Here's hoping that I get an actual loaner and not an enterprise car.

There's definitely a recall. My thermostat was replaced today. When I dropped it off for service at the dealer yesterday morning, the service advisor said the recall was sent to the dealer on Tuesday.

A TSB is not a recall. They are not recalling any S4's for thermostat problems.

There are TSB's, Recalls, and Service Actions. A recall is when a manufacture (Audi) is forced to send out letters to car owners, recalling cars, for a specific repair. The last big "Recall" was the coil campaign, when the majority of cars were "Recalled" to have their coil packs, inspected and replaced. Previous campaigns you may be aware of, is the timing belt recall on 1.8 engines.

TSB's are guides that Technicians need to follow if a customer has a complaint which relates to a specific TSB.

It's not a recall it's a TSB, they change it when you come in for service... or when you breakdown as a result of it... LOL

It's an actually an "RVU"- required vehicle update and not a recall.
Recalls are typically issued for safety related concerns

Correct. Now a RVU is a required vehicle update that is only covered while the vehicle is under the factory/CPO warranty or until the RVU expires as a Recall applies even after a vehicle is out of any warranty. Also since Audi is not forced to inform the customer of a RVU the DIYers lose out and can do not get the repairs done until usually the component actually fails - just a thought.

I just finished both the RVUs for the thermostat and coolant pump on a S5 cabrio today. It really was not that bad and payed pretty good for warranty work. The thermostat RVU covers a lot of the 3.0Ts in the A6, Q7, S4, and S5 cabrios.

I never said it was... so what is it then? I will ask the exact term from my dealer Friday... My point is they are not actually recalling cars to which point I am correct, no? Like I said you come in for service they perform the fix... you breakdown they perform the fix... right?

The title to this thread is Thermostat Recall. It's just a little mis-leading.

Another member clarified that it's an RVU, which is a Required Vehicle Update, so yes, if you were to go in for a service, or another type of repair, they will see an open RVU for the vehicle and perform a repair/update.

They are infact replacing thermostats on 3.0L vehicles, which I didnt know until today, so a pretty cool thread, thanks for the info

Sorry! You quoted me so I thought you were saying I called it a recall... I may have misused the term TSB but the actions are correct... I learned of it yesterday when the yanked my blower :) LOL

Dropped my car off this AM for a routine DSG service at 35,000 miles and was told my car is included in the thermostat replacement range. They said it was a 4 hour job to do the thermostat.

So I'll wait to hear from audi, or mention it at my next service.

From readi this post, this seems like the best course of action as it's not a recall and not urgent.

It's first come first serve for the Audi loaners. I've had an A3 TDI and an A6 3.0T even for regular service. My apt is at 7:45am.

i know... but audi says a lot of things if you know what i mean... but i feel like this will make or break the CB issue with these cars and we will be able to put that theory to rest once and for all

No need, Thermostat is under the front of the SC, just behind the "6" towards the rear of the car seen in the pic there, and about 5 inches under it. They won't care about the screem, and they use the bleed screws on the SC itself to drain and readd the coolant to the intercooling system.

Richi, While at the dealer I looked in all the ports and used my nail to scrape along side of the ports and had no residue under my nail.... Obviously, I can only get so far down though, and my car only has 3,300 miles... My dealer has had a blower off of a 30K mile car and told me it was clean but I didn't see it so take it for what it's worth... When I pull my blower I will have a much closer look and also take pics... Will probably have 4,000-4,500 mile by then! LOL

Yeah, I got the A3 for my last service, but I had to call and reserve it in advance. I tried to set up my appt at 7:30 when they open, but the lady told me to bring the car in that afternoon instead. I guess they're gonna be busy in the AM.

Are there any other symptoms of a bad thermostat in addition to the message to shut down the engine? Could the cooling system do something "funny" since it's receiving incorrect data from the thermostat?

    Nope.

Thermostat is just a specially made spring from a metal that expands and contracts at certain temperature points. It has a rubber stopper on the end, which it uses to open and close the valve to allow coolant by or stop it. If it's a (for example) 175F degree thermostat it will stay closed, preventing (most) the coolant from leaving the engine and going to the radiator, since the engine is not too hot. Once the spring is heated by the engine getting up to temp, and hits 175, it slowly opens, allowing coolant to flow by it and into the radiator to be cooled - once cooled, that comes back to the engine to get cooled further. If the engine gets too cold, it will cycle closed again through heat/cool expansion/contraction keeping the engine at prime operating temps. When they fail they are stuck shut, and the engine can overheat, so you are told to shut it down. This typically won't cause any leaks or steam.

+1 to the recall. I just called my dealership and will be going in there this evening to get it replaced. Hope I get a new A6 as a loaner.
