    2011 A4 8-speed transmission software recall

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Took my car in for 5K mile service and the service manager said the software for the 8-speed transmission has been recalled and will be updated.

    My receipt shows:
    Recall 37F8 Shift Quality
    850 WA03
    5414 37f8

My car used to rough shift if I was in heavy traffic rolling between 5-10 mph. After I got the car back, no more rough shifting. I don't know how many cars this affects.

When did this go into effect? My 15k is coming up pretty soon here.

I know nothing else about the recall. Brought the car in, was told it affect my car, got my receipt, and I admit the car runs better between 5-10 mph.

I have about 1700 miles on mine. I definitly feel it too when rolling between 5-10. Thought it was just the car maybe being broken in. I was gonna bring it up at 5k service.

I don't notice the harsh shifting. just had my 5k service done and they didn't mention about any recalls or TSB's. I may give them a call in the morning.

    My car had similar problem.
I had rough launch issue after (especially when the weather was cold) letting brake pedal off.

I recently had the recall performed and the car now feels much better and seems a bit quicker to boot.

    Technical Service Bulletin 2025272/1

Update. I took my 2011 8 speed Quattro Avant to my local dealer regarding the harsh shifting issue. After a test drive with a tech, which proved inconclusive (surprise), they decided to scan the car's software in an attempt to discover if it was up to the latest software version. It was not, and Technical Service Bulletin 2025272/1, Release date Jan 24, 2011, was complied with. It is an update of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software and it has completed cured the problem.
Additionally, during the scan, the tech noticed that there were various irregularities with certain modules that were the result of my VagCom changes. As we had been discussing these during our test drive, he knew that they were intentional changes and to not overwrite them. The same applied to the APR Stage 1 engine software (though I don't think it was apparent during the scan, but we had talked about it verbally). I imagine that had we not discussed them previously, he might have overwritten the software in an attempt to be thorough. This is, obviously, a mod friendly dealership and a very satisfying experience for me as a customer.
In any event the TSB changes have transformed the car in a big way. Much smoother and overall responsiveness is much nicer.

I just had TSB 2025272/1 applied and so far shifts are much smoother. My dealer roadtested the car before and after and claim they were able to reproduce the issue prior to applying the update.

I got my 2011 A4 less than a year ago, and I brought it in for 8km service in March (before I read this). I've noticed the rough shifting on rolling stops, and didn't think too much of it. I came across this thread and felt this was exactly the problem, but when I called in to check my VIN for a recall, they said there was nothing.

Should I schedule an appt to look into it? Before I read this thread, I didn't mind, but now that I know some people had something similar and got results, it's kind of bugging me, lol.

Good to know. Haven't really noticed any hard shifting, but I ask the dealership if I'll need it.

This is a noob question, but I am experiencing the same type of rough shifts during driving. Would the dealership software update in any way effect the APR Stage I software on the car?

Not likely, they will probably only flash the TCU, which is separate from the ECU. If they do, your APR dealer can re-flash in minutes, even on a car that originally needed the ECU removed. They modify it to allow direct programming.

I wonder if the German dealerships over here can get update a US spec car. Anyone done that yet?

I would guess so since my dealership told me that software updates are streamed from Audi; they don't have a catalog of updates residing at each dealership. just a guess - good luck.

All codings and SVM software updates are sent from a dedicated server in Germany from '09 cars 'til current. When the software of the TCM is updated, it's that sole module. Shouldn't lose your tune.

Sweet. I'll have to scan mine and see what I have already. I haven't noticed any issues so far but I'm still under 3K miles and I have a Feb or Mar 11 build date.

I have a 10/10 build date and I assume will get this update at my 5K service which is about 900 miles out. I am glad to know about this update since my car shifts fairly roughly at low speeds. Also, at very low gas pedal application the car seems to bog/hit a dead spot before moving. I honestly do not like the pedal feel in this car too much and hope this update will help.

^ the dead feel is the throttle lag. According to Audi, this is normal. It is really getting in my nerve. I can never make a smooth acceleration. It would pause and kick in like a jack rabbit. Passenger always thinking I'm trying to race.

Anyhow I had my tsb updated but I don't know what issue it fix but I still have that quick shift right of start from dead stop. Like it went straight to second gear.

My first Audi and no doubt the last. Had a bunch of problem in 3 months of ownership.

Update on my previous post of April 4th 2011. My transmission has returned to its bad performance. After the service bulletin was complied with, I had proper performance for a couple of weeks and then it seemed to revert to the harshness and lurching that seems to be the experience of so many with this transmission. I went back to the dealer and they tested it, and even had one of the technicians drive it home overnight for a more extensive test. All to no avail. They determined it was functioning properly. I even suggested they reload the service bulletin software, but they were unwilling to do so. Of course, I completely disagree that this is a properly functioning transmission. It is harsh and seems to shift at inappropriate times causing lurching and even occasional clunking. Quite annoying. I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Any suggestions?

In 2011 there is no 6 speed tiptronic. It is now an 8 speed tiptronic (see Audiusa.com) That transmission software is what is being recalled/updated. That is what this thread is about, the 2011 8 Speed Tiptronic.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead as I haven't been able to find anything recent on the matter (I apologize if I missed something or may have overlooked it). I recently purchased a 2011 A4 B8 (multi) with 31K miles. Previously, I had a 2002 B6 that sh*t the bed at 150K (timing belt). I noticed the aforementioned transmission 'shudder' right from the get-go. Last Friday, I brought the car in to the dealership for an overall inspection and specifically asked about this issue. The technician said the car had been very well cared for and that the serviceman did not notice anything abnormal about the shifting. Furthermore, the technician said the car had been updated for all major recalls, codes, etc. Prior to me bringing in the car, it had been running for ~30 minutes. I've noticed the shifting is not *as bad* when it has been warmed.

Has anyone continued to notice this problem and, if so, what has been done to remove the issue? As mentioned above, there is a code that has, somewhat, resolved the issue (TSB 2025272/1). Is this something I need to push with the dealer or something I can do myself with a VAG-COM?

For the record, this car is light-years above my old B6 and I love everything about it thus far. I would just like to do what I can to reduce the transmission shudder I experience at low speeds. If anyone has anything to add or suggest, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

Just had mine in for 25k and nothing mentioned about TSB's for 8 Speed Tip issues.

Had mine flushed last summer and everything is ok for now.

I definitely have this issue when downshifting at low speeds. I'll bring it up next time I'm at the dealer

I had the TSB installed, erased, and installed on 2 separate times. Issue still there after 25k. Going to take it to the 3rd different dealership in 3 years and see if they find anything different.
