rear bumper fart flaps (last question of the the day i swear)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As most of us with subs in their b6 know, we have these fantastic little flaps in the rear that make a fart like noise when the bass hits.

My question is where the hell are these flaps and do i need to take the rear bumper off to tend to them?

Thanks again. Its the last question today i swear

In my 02', there's a small trapezoid-shaped compartment on the driver side of my trunk (directly below the trunk-shock). You can remove it and the flaps are in there somewhere. Maybe taping it off will work, I believe it's to relieve pressure from inside your trunk.

I would recommend against sealing them. The air has to go somewhere, if you seal the flap you're either going to blow them off or create a new way for the air to escape (one that might be costly). I don't know where the flaps are (don't believe I had them on my B5) but maybe you can just enlarge the hole or something so it doesn't make any noise?

pull the trunk carpet from the inside and you can pop them out, you may have to remove rear bumper because they clip outwards, i was able to jiggle them around enough to get them out without doing so however,
    good luck.

On my Avant, the vent comes out toward the outside, but with the subamp removed, the vent will be accessable from the inside. To stop the farting noises, I made a new flap set using a thicker stiffer material, the flaps open as needed for air flow, but don't make any noises under any conditions.

when your AC is on with the recycle off meaning you get fresh air the flaps open with air presure and you feel cold air coming out. when you close a door or trunk they also open just a bit with air presure. If you seal them your sub will hit harder. If thats something you want.

I dont have any pics but they are 2 black boxes with rubber flaper vents under the tail lights. you need to take the rear bumper of to see them.

Damn, that's a lot of air bein pushed around to move those suckers that much. Or perhaps mine are as well and I'm just interpreting it as the trunk itself rattling. Gotta add some dynamat and see.

im wondering if u just covered the flap from the inside without pulling off the bumper would that solve it instead of having to completly remove the flaps. The passenger side flap can be seen if u pull off the carpet and cubby box. I wanted to cover it but was worried that it was something we needed.

    Excellent picture. Thanks
I believe the reasoning for the flaps is to relieve cabin pressure. If they were sealed, there would be no where for the cabin pressure to go and could cause some serious issues. Dont quote me on that, maybe oldguy or diagnosticator could chime in on this one.

Well see thats where I beg to differ. I'm 25, which by my standards isnt old. And IMHO, louder does not mean better sound quality. I have a 10'' Alpine in a bassworx case, a mtx amp and a dynavin unit. Plays plenty loud and i can rattle the whole car with ease, but I dont. I dont see the point. I love music, and I love listening to it loud, but not to the point where I have to go looking for every rattle in my car just to be able to pump the db's so loud that The ppl in other cars next to me cant even hear their own music....ya know just sayin :P

I was able to remove them with the bumper on.

Just open up the trunk panels and unclip it from inside the car. It will drop toward the outside of the car. Problem solved.
I sealed the holes over with Dynamat.

Even when its loud, its clear as day. I hate people who put shit sound equipment in their cars. Its retarded to be loud and not sound good. Go big or go home

The one way air flow from the vents is why the vent flaps are provided by the design. The capability to allow air to flow out of the cabin, aided by the low pressure area behind the car when at speed, is needed for efficient function of the HVAC. Another important function is the vents help the doors close without bouncing off of the air cushion that would exist without the vents, preventing the doors from closing and latching fully and requiring slaming the doors closed, compared with the vents working right.

John, I just had a thought on this. I don't want to remove / block these vents off as they're obviously there for a reason. You think I could just weight em down a bit?

I reckon that would let them do their job for closing your doors, but for venting air out of the cabin it might not work. It would all depend on how much weight you added.

Getting the right amount of added weight while still working right, did not seem practical. I tried several different ideas, then I decided to cut out and install new flaps using a different material.

Per usual, a good point D. Thinking my trunk lid is the bulk of my problem. Will possibly add some Second Skin to that first before tearing my trunk apart.

I started on my rattling issues last night and had some success. I pulled the liner from the trunk lid and added sound deadener and packed some of the larger spaces with some really dense foam. Effectively killed all rattles from the boot lid. Solid.

Next I tried a bit of an experiment with the driver's side bumper flap. I took some deadener (old Dynaliner - which is somewhat breathable), placed it over the flap and taped the edges. I was hoping this would quell the airflow enough to silence the flaps, but it only lessened the rattles. Next I tried packing more foam in front of the flap (on the inside) but it's still not working. Basically, the flaps still move around in the their respective holes no matter what. It's looking like removal and re-engineering them or adding tape to each flap might be the answer. Since I can't get to the pass side w/out tearing my trunk apart, gonna leave that one for now and just tape off the driver's side. Hopefully, that'll help enough while still maintaining some ability for air to exit.

    Dem rattles got me good.
