Jump start with hood stuck shut?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi guys, I know this will sound like a rookie request, but can anyone tell me if there is a way to access a point to jump start the car with the hood stuck shut? I've searched and found numerous threads on battery comparisons, but none of that info got me the answer I'm looking for. Thanks.

The hood is stuck due to a front end collision. She's sitting at the storage yard, the shipper was unable to pick it up since he couldn't open the hood. I took the hour drive over there this evening and couldn't get it open, and didn't want to cut is for fear of it smashing the windshield while being transported. For some reason I thought there was an interior access. I'd appreciate any help, I have next week off and this is my project for the week. Its an auto-tiptronic 3.0 quattro

There is the "30" terminal post under the dash which is direct to the battery. That is the connection that is used to power up the fusebox and all interior accessories. The wire is large, but not big enough to jump a completely dead battery. It would likely melt down the harness. You may be able to connect the jumper cable directly at the starter's positive wire as that is also direct to the battery. Space is limited there, so I don't know how difficult that would be, but it's the only option I can think of that would actually work. If it had to be done, you could always disconnect the positive wire from the starter to get better access to it, then use a second temporary wire from your jump connection back to the starter post.

If this thing is wrecked, isn't it going to be hauled on a flatbed anyway? You just winch it up there and off you go. I guess I don't understand what needs to happen here.

This is the second leg of a 2 leg trip. It is also being towed from its current location 2.5hrs north to the Canadian border, and when it was scheduled it was a run and drive (it drove onto the first carrier). Changing the last leg of the trip to a 150 mile flat bed tow will more than double the price, and be a logistical nightmare since where its at now and has been for 3 days is due to a favor from the shipper that's taking it the rest of the way. He has a 8 car drive on carrier. I was trying to find out if there was a second terminal access under the seat, in the trunk, etc--I wasn't aware of the layout, as I was waiting to have it in front of me to get familiar. If there are no other options, out comes the sawszall I guess.

Since you cannot save the hood I would cut it where I paint the red line, open it, jump start the car and use ropes etc to hold the hood while car is being towed or unscrew it and put it inside the car. Or dump it over there if they allow me to do that.

If the battery is not completely dead, you could probably get away with jumping it under the dash. Not advisable, but it may work in a pinch. Jumping it at the starter location would be more ideal, but is obviously harder to get at. Good Luck.

EDIT: Geez, I just saw the photo. That looks like it is open enough to sneak a jump lead right under the hood, eh? Get a flashlight and go to town. Easy for me to say that from my computer chair, though. But if you could get the battery tray plastic weaseled out of there, it looks possible.

The battery is fully discharged, no door chime, no interior lights, nada. I've seen those cigarette lighter chargers, but don't own one. I have a traditional jump box, which is useless in this scenario.

What I was trying to avoid was the inevitable, foolishly hoping that there was an alternative access, or the batt was in the trunk, under the rear seat (which is what I initially thought for some reason)....which would have helped me avoid making another round trip over there to solve this prob before Monday when they will attempt pickup for the 2nd time. It also prevents me from spending the day pretending to be Irish and drinking myself into a coma.

Looks like I'll have to cut the hood. I could grab a cig charger from Wally world, but I'd have to idle the A4 forever until it charges, and hope it holds the charge until Monday, because I don't see the shipper running it from his cig lighter to the A4.

If you gonna cut the hood maybe it would be a good idea to buy a new battery. Just don't tight the clamps so shipper can connect them whenever he needs to start the car.

to me, that looks like more than enough room to get cables on the battery. is the hood stuck on the front clip? There has to be a metal pipe laying around that yard somewhere. I would try to wedge it in between the hood and the radiator and pry it out of whatever its stuck on

Thanks for the help guys, I managed to snake a cable through and get her started. I did end up cutting the hood so I could remove the upper core support which I did today. I'm itching to get it finished already. I'm off to find parts diagrams to start making a list of what I'll need.
