6 ton shop press enouph for wheel bearing?

Ok so I got my spindle out finally after having no luck with the darn pinch bolt. It was not budging. ended up destroying both upper ball joints.

Either way, will a 6 ton press be enouph to press out the wheel bearing on a 99 Audi A4 Quattro V6? Front wheel bearing that is.

Everyone wants $50-60 bux and a full day to do the bearing. I can get a 6 ton shop press for right around $70.

I dont want to get it if it's not enouph force to do our wheel bearings.

    Let me know.
    Thanks,

6 won't do it. I had trouble with a 15 ton unit before.

Wow, I never knew they had that kind of force on them to be pushed in. I figured a couple thousand pounds would be good enough.

Agreed, the small hydraulic press at the folk's garage wasn't enough. I ended up taking a large sledgehammer and pounding it out.

Mighty hammer of Thor > Hydraulic press

Where you're going to have a peach of a time is putting the new one in. The way that spindle is shaped it's tough to get it flat and you need it level when you go to re-install the axle flange. If it goes in cockeyed or if the bearing isn't supported properly from underneath you're doing it all over again with a new bearing. I would contact a machine shop in your area and see what they would charge for an hour of time. At least that way you're not going to be stuck doing this twice.

like stated above - you need like a 20ton press. A full day to press in a bearing? When I did my wheel bearings, I went down to the shop and actually watched them press the old bearing out and press the new one in. It literally took less than a few minutes and it was only $30 each.

A 20 ton? Your bearings enjoyed where they were. I pressed my front bearing out and in with a harbor freight 12-ton no problem.

Yea I'm debating rather to get the 12 ton at harbor freight. They are on sate right now and I have a 20% coupon. Looks like a lot of folks said you need at least 20. Must be one of those sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.
    I used a 5lb hammer on my pinch bolt and it's still didn't nudge. I swung that 5lb too....car 144k, so I doubt it's ever been changed.

I was hoping the 12ton would do it. I was thinking 6 was good enouph but they dont have it locally so I was going to run with the 12.

Now I'm thinking about not even going that route as many of you said I would need a 20 for sure, specailly for putting the new one in.

They said they wanted it dropped off so they can work it in their schedule during the day. No one around seems to do it on the spot like back in the days. Not sure what the deal is. You figure with a press it shouldn't take more than say 15 minutes.

I got lucky with all my bolts, only one I destroyed was the tie rod bold, and that was easily replaced. The 12 ton had no issues getting the bearing in. The problems I had was height. I had to adjust the blocks like 256 times to get everything seated right.

I always use a 12ton press but I've seen it done with a hammer. I wouldnt guarantee the bearing seated correctly.. but it wasnt my car so whatever

I pressed my bearing out with a small like 6ton press I think, Pneumatic press, and pressed it in with a regular hand press and my dad's 50 years of "relaxed muscle".

I tried a 6 ton from HF and that wouldn't do it.
