    Painting brake dust covers

Has anybody here thought of painting the dust covers behind the rotors black?

I really think these covers are quite an eyesore. What is the easiest way to remove them for painting?

no idea, but I like the car! I think the black dust covers would look good on it.

If they serve no purpose other than to keep OEM extreme pad dust away from our what evers...
After we've changed our pads to various low-dust pads, do we any longer need these these ugly-ass thingies?
Or are they necessary/needed b/c of the emergency rear electronic brake system on our B8s?
    Don't know - replies requested.

Will have my rotors done soon. Will ask the tech how easy it is to paint the shields.

I don't think the painting is the issue, its getting them off since they are behind the rotors. My guess is all of it has to be removed to get to it. But if, as techs tell me, they don't serve any real protective purpose - why not remove them? Other than it would make the current rotors look really small :P

I've considered having mine powdercoated black. If I do the BBK soon I'll see if I can get it done.

Yes, thus why I was going to ask about it when my rotors were coming off.
Maybe they could spray it with high temp black while my calipers were getting painted also.

Cleaned and painted mine in situ with a heat proof satin silver paint. I also did the hub where you can see it behind the wheel this makes it all look and stay very clean. The shields are a heat shield and also help to control the cooling air flow.

What do you mean by painted in situ? Can they be removed without removing the rotors and calipers? If you need to remove the rotor and caliper, are there any pitfalls like disconnecting the brake lines or special tool for caliper etc?

No just clean it all up and paint the visible area and as far as you can reach behind the disc. I also apply some Wheel Seal and Shine from Planet Polish when ever I do the wheels and any dirt just washes off with a hose.

Can you post a pic of what the final product looks like? I am really keen to do this!
