Hyper Silver or Gun Metal on a meteor gray car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm about to buy some new wheels for my 2011 P+ sport meteor gray A4 and would like to get everyone's take on the color. I am either leaning toward the VMR 708s or some S5 rep wheels. Both come in hyper silver or gun metal. What is everyone's opinions as far as best look? I'm thinking hyper silver since the window trim is about the same color. Thoughts? Pics would be helpful as well.

Gun metal for sure, same colour as my car and that's whats going on mine next. Gun metal A5/S5 style wheels.

I'm more partial to hyper silver but I'm sure either would look good

Gunmetal gets lost on meteor too easily IMHO. I debated this for months. Part of the problem is that meteor is one of those chameleon colors ie it looks very different depending on the ambient lighting. Sometimes it looks weird w/ gunmetal wheels, sort of like when you see some dude wearing navy blue socks w/ black pants. The colors are similar but slightly off in certain lighting.

    Hyper silver for contrast.

brushed aluminum looks best on meteor IMO, although those wheels are not offered in such a finish.

There is a mteror grey S4 on VMR's in gunmetal, couldn't find it and got lazy. Look for it if you are interested

Seems like this would have been a good thread for a poll.

Hyper silver offers a nice contrast to the meteor gray

I have meteor gray and have hyper silver, like the contrast, dont care for gunmetal, blends too much with the tire imo.

+1 hyper silver for same reasons of accent/contrast.

I am contemplating this as well. I would like to see a machined wheels w/ gunmetal for some contrast.

JohnPriya's A5 is hot... if you wanted to go black.

That's a tough call as both options look nice. I had a hard time making the same decision when I purchased my wheels but ended up going with Silver as I liked the contrast and thought anything darker would just blend in with the car too much. I've seen JohnPriya's car in person and the black wheels looks great on it so I still don't know which is preferable. Anyways, here's my car with silver...it's daytona grey (and an S5) but similar enough to give you an idea:

I've also debated this much. Meteor is one of those colors that can look dirty easily. In my opinion, dark wheels make the car look like it needs a wash. But it also depends on the lighting. That's what I love about the color is that is changes constantly. If you go dark, then I think you should also have dark accents (plastidip the crome) like the picture of the A5 above. Sometimes I wonder if a silver wheel with the inside of the wheel painted to be Meteor Gray would look awesome. If I had any photoshop skills I would try it but i don't.

    My thoughts exactly

Sometimes wheels that are close in color to the color of a car can look good, but I'd say the Hyper Silver may be a *safer* bet.

Edit: Ah, +1 to the poll option as well.

Yeah I seen a picture of the dual spoke style A5/S5 wheel which was gunmetal on the inside the but the spoke faces are silver. Looked good. I got rid of all the chrome on the front of my car with a black optics grill. I prefer the dark look.

Still think these are the best looking wheels in my opinion, but there are so many tastes when it comes to wheels..... and the break dust doesn't make them look dirty

I am in love with that style david. Those look incredibly badass, but I don't think gunmetal would complement DSB all that well. Perhaps the machined face AU520....
But I don't mean to move away from your thread, OP. I still say Hyper Silver w/meteor

Possible to powdercoat the hyper silvers to Quartz Grey Metallic or Monza Silver?
I am clueless re powdercoating process, thus don't know if can be done to a specific paint code - if doable, IMO would be an interesting option.
As ItsDubC and Routertyty have said, Meteor Grey is the trickiest color to contrast, with its' green/blue/grey/charcoal effect throughout the day and evening.

I've got VMR V708's on my BB

'Curb burn' at 7:30 - my bad.

If can be done, thinking to powdercoat them Quartz Grey (entire rim or spokes/center hub?).
I have Quartz Grey trim now at back, plan to do same soon in front - doing the rims Quartz Grey would create a color contrast transition back-to-front.
    Opinions welcomed.
    Cheers

You can't do custom colours to my knowledge for powder coating. At least non of the places I have ever been to could. You should go by a place that does it and look at colour samples though. There is a good selection of colours from the better places. Powder coating just part can be tricky depending on the part. Powder coating is exactly that. They coat the item with a powder then bake it a high temperature. It's almost impossible to get a good clean line when only doing part of an object. There is real thickness to it so it will leave an edge.

Greg, I'd talk to Rotiform... they do a lot of custom powder coating.

Thanks for the info - will look into them, think they're in SoCal.
My coilover/brake pad/rotor/exhaust install shop here in Mountain View, SonicMS (Blake_P and I swear by them) suggested the powder coat to me the other day - they partner with someone who does powder coating.

I swear I've seen people on some of the car shows on TV just simply paint the wheels. why not just do that? You can get a clean line if you are planning on painting just part of the wheel. I'm really interested in painting just the inside and leaving the face with the original color.
Greg, i'm sure whatever you do will look awesome.

I saw the S5 rep wheels at OEM Wheels Plus as well and liked them. I've read some posts of people saying that the OEM Wheels Plus wheels are bad quality with higher chance of bending, poor balance and finish. Would all of you out there have comfort in buying from them or would you absolutely steer clear? I will be getting some 18s and would think the slightly smaller size would help prevent bending, etc. They are significantly cheaper than others I've seen. I know VMRs have a good reputation but to be honest I like the S5 reps a bit more than the 708s.

I have heard the same. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has bought wheels from them. They sell these exact same wheels at PYSpeed.com. Wonder what they have to say about them?

Paint is fine except it will chip and wont hold up to everyday driving abuse.
