I have heard rumors that the tfsi engines have been modified to address this problem although this hasnt been confirmed by anyone as far as i know. For now it seems that all audi direct injection motors will suffer from the carbon build up issue.
I think its fairer to say that its a by-product of direct injection systems, not Audi - correct?

In general, from the forums here though, I have never heard of catastrophic failures of any type with this engine. Reliability is on par or better than recent BMW 3s (their engine is an older model however), and is right out more reliable than Mercedes or Porsche (consumerreports).
If you are looking into a German make, you just need to realize that a certain amount of bugs usually come with the territory. That said, I have yet to have one issue requiring an unscheduled visit to a dealer after 1.5 years of ownership - even with the modest modding I have done to my 2.0T.
