Brakes make a noise right as you stop?

    Hi Guys,

I have a 2009 US-market Premium Plus sedan with the auto transmission.

Right as I come to a stop, taking care to brake as slowly as I can (to reduce that sudden jerk to you and passengers as you stop the car), the brakes make a metal grabbing/binding noise - not squealing, but a binding, grabbing thunk?. They make that noise right as the car stops moving, as well as right when you let off the brakes. You can make it better or worse by pushing/releasing the brake pedal as slowly as you can, so you get the noise as you creep forward.

It's really annoying an embarrassing in a luxury car.

I bought the posi-quiet pads in an effort to combat this, but it hasn't helped, which makes me think it's a caliper issue.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? I am hesitant to take it to the Audi dealer as they'll try to sell me on new pads/rotors even though I jsut changed the pads and the rotors have like 25K miles on them.

    Thoughts?!

Is it a squealing sound as you have light pressure on the pedal, just as you come to a stop? More prevalent during cold weather?

I've experienced it with my own car on a few occasions. Only thing that worked for me was to bed the brakes, but unfortunately that was only temporary and the sound came back after a while. Check the B8 S4 forums, there's a pretty long thread there detailing their experiences.

Not squealing, more like a light clunk or binding sound right as you get to ZERO forward movement - as the brakes grab the rotor for the last bit of rotation - Does that make sense?

It's not a sequel, more of a binding/thunk. definately from the brakes, as I can repeat it over and over in stop and go traffic as you get on get off the brakes to stop the car/creep forward.

happens to me, i just credit it to the cold weather. earlier in the winter, when it's not perpetually cold, it was happening all the time until i warmed the brakes up.

wait until warmer weather and it should go away.

**edit: your reply was posted before me posting. i dont have a clunk, just squealing.

I think a binding noise is the best way to explain it - as you stop they bind up and as you let go of the brake pedal to begin creeping fwd (remember this an auto) they unbind.

my a4 is so loud when it comes to a stop. hella loud binding sound but its short like a click. its just the sound of brakes working... and not being lubed. lube your brakes a bit maybe? i dont trip on the sound tho.

Yes, I think it's the cold/wet winter weather because mine make a slight little "squeak" when coming to a stop the first couple times in the morning, then goes away after that... and mine are StopTech BBK, btw so nothing specific to the stock brakes that I can tell.

Glad I found this thread, because mine has been doing this for a couple months, then went away when it warmed up this weekend. Today, temps hit 15 again and it was back louder than before. I thought I was going nuts or my brakes were just dying. Will wait for consistent warm temps before really worrying :)

Same here. I get some squealing the first few times I brake on cold mornings. Also I think I have the exact same binding sound as the OP. It also seems to be temperature dependent and I have experienced this in other cars as well so I chalk it up to physics.
