Suspension swap Allroad air to A6 spring and strut

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to convert my air ride to a coilover suspension. I am getting a complete suspension, front and rear, from an quattro a6. I am not sure what parts I will use from the a6, but I will probably rebuild the entire front suspension when it is out of the car. My question is if I buy a control arm kit for the rebuild do I buy a control arm kit for the allroad or for the a6. I have read that there are specific control arm parts for the allroad. Let me know if I worded this correctly.

    Michael:

You would probably buy the kit for the A6. But, you can also drill holes in the allroad's upper control arm mount to make it work. I am running OEM A6 suspension on my allroad with no other parts necessary for the swap, and it works great.

Thanks for the answer. What does drilling the hole do? Does it allow the center bolt of the strut to come through the top hat?

The control arm assembly pieces on an allroad have a 6-hole bolt pattern for the airbag bolts. To convert them, you will need to drill 2 new holes for the coil spring's upper perch - or top hat - which has two studs at a different radius.

Well if you have a leaking strut, replacing the strut would be the simplest solution. Replacing all of the struts, or even your entire airbag setup with conventional coilovers, would seem to solve the problem as well.

yeah my right front and left front both show signs of leakage so I'm gonna go ahead and change to conventional struts/shocks with some sport lowering springs... anyone have the eibach ones? I saw a pretty good deal on a 1.5 in. drop...

Be aware that the suspension geometry in the allroad is different than an A6, either sedan or Avant.... the lowering springs for a standard A6 will drop the car a lot more than you expect....

Get a set of ST coils and then you can adjust them.
