    Front brakes grinding when cold?

My front brakes sometimes make a grinding sound when I apply the brakes at slow speeds in cold weather. Like, when I first start my car off and start moving then push the brakes, the front rotors will make a grinding sound like my pads are worn down the metal. But the sound goes away after a few minutes, so it can't be the pads. I never remember this happening in the summer when it's warm. Is this normal for our cars?

That can happen due to a condensation and a thin layer of oxidation (rust) overnight - it gets removed quickly with your first bit of braking of the day. Totally normal. Take a look at your rotors in the morning and sometimes you'll see the rust on the rotors.

I don't think it's rust, because sometimes I'll drive my car for an hour, leave it sitting for 5 or 6 hours, then drive it again and the grinding will still happen (but it goes away quickly.)

Our B5 does the same thing. Im pretty sure its exactly what "sejman" described. if not on the rotors then on the semi-metallic pads themselves.

It's the condensation- Most humid areas, such as certain areas of PA and fo' sho' here in NOVA, have a lot of moisture in the air(duh), and when the hot rotors sit, they collect condensation...which creates rust, and this noise is just that rust being rubbed off. To assuage any fears, I would talk with a tech about it, but Im pretty confident if your liners are good, you should be aight...
