    Audi Headlights Comprehension Guide

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems that there is some confusion between the different headlights installed on the A4 B7 so here is a little guide that should answer most of the questions:

    OEM Bi-Xenon

    YELLOW ARROW: Bi-Xenon - Bulb Type = D1S
    GREEN ARROW: Turn Signal - Bulb Type = 1156 (12V 21W)
BLACK ARROW: DRL (Day Time Runing Light): Bulb Type = 1156 (12V 21W)
    RED ARROW: City Light - Bulb type = 158,168,194 (12V 5W)

    WHY BI-XENON?

The headlight use the same bulb for Low & High beam. Here is how it works:

This is a picture of the beam housing removed from the headlight. You can see the D1S bulb installed. Also note the grey metal plate in the front.

Same housing, side view: you can see that the grey flap is in contact with the housing: This is the LOW BEAM POSITION

When you select High Beam, via an electro magnet, the grey flap tilts forward: This is the HIGH BEAM POSITION

    HALOGEN

    YELLOW ARROW: Low Beam - Bulb Type = H7 (12V 55W)
    BLUE ARROW: High Beam - Bulb Type = H7 (12V 55W)
    RED ARROW: City Light - Bulb type = 158,168,194 (12V 5W)
    GREEN ARROW: Turn Signal - Bulb Type = 1156 (12V 21W)

I think I covered everything and now it makes sense for everyone
Let me know if any question

    PERFECT!!

BLACK ARROW: DRL (Day Time Runing Light): Bulb Type = 1156 (12V 21W)

Now i know what type of bulb specifications to get when getting a white color without throwing an error!!!

Well, here is the catch in your case:
I assume that you will be looking for LED but you will not find an LED replacement with a 21W draw. They will need to have a resistor built in and I have not seen, yet, these in 1156 socket type

Forget the LED then I'll just stick with the regular bulb and find a white one :)

It's too bad only a handful of people will read this before asking whether they have xenon headlights or not.

    Great write-up nonetheless.

Awesome post Phil! My city lights are out for delivery now and should be here shortly. I was planning on just going to the garage and fiddling with the different bulbs but I can already tell this post saved me a lot of time.

Hey everyone, I managed to remove the drl bulbs but I don't seem to be able to remove the city lights.
It's really cranked in there and I have no visibility.
I can touch the back of the support holding the bulb but I'm not in a good position to rotate the support to unlock it.
    Any tips?
Do I have to rotate it 1/4 just like the DRL light to take it out?
    Thanks guys IMG_20200105_131640.jpeg

All good I found a video online that says that you just have to pull and no need to twist the socket. I didn't want to pull on the cable so I managed to grab the plastic socket with a plier and pulled jiggling it a bit and came out. Now the other side.
