    Can't find my engine code...?

I have a 2001 Audi A4 Quatro 1.8T and I am ordering my timing belt parts but need to be sure of my engine code first. I know that it's supposed to be stamped on the driver side front of the block like in THIS link but mine is completely smooth, no marks. I checked all of the stickers under the hood and in the door jambs but there is no mention of the engine code anywhere.

I am pretty sure mine is an AWM but I need to be 100% sure before I order. Anyone help? Anywhere else I can look to find the code?

    Thanks

There is as sticker on the back of the valve cover, but they tend to fall off. It has a bar-code on it and will have the engine code letters printed on it as the first part of the code. Also, the AWM is identifiable by it's Variable Valve Timing. There will be a VVT solenoid (black cylinder) at the back of the head with an electrical connector on the end. Here are some photos (VVT solenoid is in the yellow boxes).

If it has that VVT solenoid, it is an AWM. If it doesn't, then it is an ATW. Unless it has a throttle cable, then it is an AEB. It is pretty cut and dry. If the 10th digit of your VIN is a "1", your car is an 01 and has an AWM. Also, If the surface where the code should be is smooth, that means either your car has had a new engine, or at least a new cylinder head at some point. Which is probably good.

If you want to snap a quick photo of your engine, with the plastic cover removed, I'm sure we could identify it for you just by the photo.

Thanks a bunch for the reply, that was good info. I just went out and checked for the VVT and it's there so it is an AWM. Now I can order my parts, haha.

    Thanks again.

FYI...if the cylinder head has smooth cast where the engine code should be, then the cylinder head has been replaced with a factory reman.

yup. when I replace cylinder heads, I have to scribe in the code and it's typically cheaper for the customer to pony up for a new head than to have the valves replaced along with the possability of having the valve guides replaced as well from a machine shop.

    97-99.5 = AEB (Large-port head, forged pistons, 20mm wristpins)
00 = ATW (Small-port head, same bottom end as the AEB)
01 = AWM (Same head casting as ATW, but uses a VVT controller instead of a standard cam tensioner, and uses a 06A block, with cast pistons and 19mm wristpins).
