    Misfiring and rotten egg

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
More problems with the S, i drove to pick up my buddy today and the car ran fine. Started it back up and have a CEL and the car is misfiring very bad. Starting out in 1st gear i have to really baby it to not shake myself to death. And if I get on it, i get the flashing CEL. At the same time it now smells like rotten eggs but I'm pretty sure that its related to the misfiring? From my knowledge the smell means its an ignition issue. Anyways here the dreaded vag . Ive had the cyl 3 misfire and the 02 bank 2 for a while but it never caused any issues and no CEL. Any help is always appreciated.

The rotten egg smell is due to cat failure, either clogged or just shot. You have misfires obviously and you have 02 sensor codes but that could be from the cats failing. Replace your cats or just do piggies.

GIAC FXK04 (Hammer) installed with a big fat cell...update, cell has been gone for a long time now but smells like it's running rich.

Would a dead cat really cause all that? I was thinking the the misfires are dumping fuel into the cats.....? And would it be the precats in the dp's or the main ones dying?

Since you have a VAG-COM, log misfire recognition@idle. Do each bank and watch the misfire count on each cylinder. Look for a large number of misfires, like 1/second, you want to make sure all your cylinders are firing.

Yes, when you misfire, you are dumping more fuel (this is not good...) this is what killed your cat on your drivers side (Bank 2, B2), So now you have to replace both the primary and secondary O2 sensors on the driver's side. On top of that you have to either replace your downpipe or gut it, and gut the passenger side as well.

Then you have to get to the route of the misfire on cylinder 3.

The moral of this story, is if you don't take care of your possessions, they will drain your wallet. Why would think driving around with a misfire would be ok?

Bank 2 is actually the driver side(cylinders 4-6). Misfiring codes can cause catalyst/o2 sensor faults do to the raw fuel being dumped into the cats(egg smell). Like mholme said check your misfire counter and see if all your cy. are firing. check spark plugs coils broken, etc related to spark. Also do you have a tune?

Ive seen rear o2 codes before because of misfiring due to a bad coil. Dont assume your cats are clogged without diagnosing.

    1. Log 015 and 016 to see what cylinders are misfiring
    2. Swap coils at misfiring cyl and change out plugs
    3. Swap ICM's
    4. Log 115 egt's the magic number is 945

Thank you to the people that are being helpful! .I logged misfires and cyl 5 was getting around +/- 10 a second at idle. I swapped the icms right after that. I put the one closer to the front of the car with the orange plugs, to the back position. Went back and logged misfires and now the misfires were at cyl 2! Same amount around 10 a sec. So this means its one of the Icms correct? If so which one controls cylinders 1-3? Btw car is stock, no tune

The driver side ICM is bad, cyl 4-6. They are the ones with the brown harnesses. Passenger side is the black harnesses, cyl 1-3.

thanks for letting us know how you resolved it. Lots of people do not do that and then the thread is worthless info that you have to look through when u need to find some info through the search function. +1 imaginary rep lol.
