So had a new engine dropped in the car. I had the compression checked at 200psi accross the board, we replaced the timing belt, valve cover gaskets, valve tensioner gaskets, and such. Car has no codes popping up. we checked the clutch and it was still in good shape as well as the rest of what we can see. all this was done by a certified mechanic (one of my good friends and kind of the S4 guru in NE Iowa) guy knows his stuff and knows s4's.

heres the problem as he took the car for a second test drive a noise popped up that was intermittant and didn't really change through the revs and nothing in particular brought it on. the sound is not metallic, sounds like plastic. theres no vibrations/clunks or anything in the body, pedals, or clutch. we dont know what it is but he's said if its not gone by the end of next week i gotta go back to driving my jetta, and the car goes back on the lift for no extra charge and have the trans cracked from the engine and see what we can find. I need to know what this might be, and if it will go away and is literally just some stupid plastic.

Can't give much advice, but check to make sure the undercover is secure. I might be secure enough to stay up normally, but when it catches a bit of wind from driving, it gets pulled down. I've had that happen before so figured it might be worth mentioning.

does it change with speed if it doesn't change with revs?

it can come up with the car in neutral and the undercover is an evo-thor skidplate (think i'd hear it if it comes loose or dragging haha) no change with speed really nothing entirely correlates with the sound

when he heard it during his test drive he put it on the lift and checked everything underneath and checked if the exhaust was leaking

its going back in i just drove it 30mi with no change in frequency sound or any correlations to any input or any circumstances. my mechanic put it on the lift and found the location of the sound is in the bell housing by the clutch. clutch in or clutch out doesn't change it either. did get two codes 1120 and 1140 also had a beep and a yellow indication on my lcd dash screen, but the pixels are bad and so i can't read it.

The good:
mechanic will be putting it up on the lift and cracking the tranny off to see what it is for free
if it damages anything (cause this came on after his work only) the shop will pay for the it
The engine itself has a 6 month warrenty
I still got my trust jetta

This is the 4-5th time the car has been in the shop and i love this car and hate paying to keep it.

very odd, but my only guess would be input shaft bearing. usually will change with speed though.. but thats the only thing i can think of.

Well its gonna be figured out i hate missing this car, but since its going back in i'll have him put in a bosch 044 and some other shit. great thing is my mechanic will put that simple stuff in for cheap to free (that is included with if he's doing other stuff) So its great to have a guy i can trust with my car
