The cons of lowering the A6.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone! First of all, happy new year! Its been a while since my last post. So, the time has come to seriously consider lowering the six. Ive decided to go for the KW V1. We all know the overall benefit of lowering our ride is to make it more sportier in feel and to look good of course. But im just curious to know the other side of the coin. What cons did u find out as a result of lowering the car? What problems came up as a result of it?
Im about to pull the trigger this spring and i need to weigh the pros and cons. Since everyone here has some in depth knowledge and experience with this topic Im all ears in your perspective on this. Thanks in advance!

Depends how much you lower the car....but in general, you will wear through suspension parts faster, you will tear cv boots more often, and then there is the scarping the bumper all the time thing, but that depends on where you live.

Im not worried about scrapping all the time. I think thats already a given lol. The thing im worried about is if this car has any part in particular that will be most affected when lowered. Cv boots and joint plus the control arms i know will have to be replaced often but what else? If im missing anything, i hope you guys can help me know what is?

You will go through tires much faster. When you lower the car it will mess up the camber and the front end of these cars do not have camber adjustment (the rears do). Expect to see a lot of wear on the inside edges of your tires. You can minimize this if you only lower it to the same level as the Audi Sport suspension.

My a6 came with sport suspension so if thats the case then might as well not lower it anymore. But if i can get away lowering it with one finger gap between the fender and wheels how much wear am i going to get? Im not slamming the car btw.

only cons are the cv boots...camber is nothing of a issue. Because it is a very easy fix. You just have to do the rear adjustment of the camber and your problem is solved...i lowered my 1.8 inches is what it ended up being and i had to adjust my camber for a number of reasons. It just so happened that my friend is a tech a audi and he did it for free. but i did the camber adjustment because i have 21's for summer wheels and i made my rear camber -1.54 so it wouldnt rub. it still does from time to time but not horrible lol. so as far as i can see i really havnt had any issues with my a6 since i lowered it, i have lowered all my cars and it is the best thing lol i love it. hope this was helpful!

    Pros: Better handling, better looks.

Cons: Ride quality will suffer, CV Boots and Control Arm bushings will wear out quicker, the car may scrape if you are too low.

Tire wear and camber isn't an issue if the car is properly aligned, so long as you aren't too ridiculously low. Rubbing and scraping can happen but it depends on ride height and the angles of the roads you frequent (like driveways, parking lot entrances, ect). Ride quality will decrease, plain and simple, it will be harsher and you'll feel road imperfections significantly more.

~70mm lower on H&R coilovers. 20x9 ET45, 265/30s. Aligned at dealer with to 20s on it. No tire wear issues. I clocked the control arms up and retorqued while at ride height when I did the suspension install, that should hold of bushing wear a touch longer. I get a slight rub in the fender liner on the rears, just need to trim it.

Ned, thanks for the pics. That's the height I'm after. well, a bit higher like 1 finger gap... that's like a centimeter and a half.
B6onboost, thanks for the input. The only thing that worried me was the front camber adjustment which is not really adjustable compared to the rears. I didn't really think about that when i lowered my Passat but you're right, with proper alignment and as long as i don't go crazy low.. i should be alright.
Roguhedges, i can't wait to see photos of your ride height. Post it up!
LiverBullet, 1.8 seems to be just right but i'll be running on 19s compared to your set up. If i do end up getting 20s.. i'll be doing the same with my camber most likely.

So I talked to my trusted shop here in TO. I'm most likely to pull the trigger when the snow clears by April. For now, its save save save and more research. btw, we should have a thread for Suspension reference lol/.

See why I need to lower this? Its too high and it makes the 19s look smaller.

As far as cons on my setup... The ride is on par with a sports car. It's hard, made harder by 30 series tires. But I corner like a slot car... I have done 3.5 hour drives with the family without complaint though. I cannot pull over a parking curb. I clear most speed bumps only occationally rubbing the rear mudflaps. I had to buy a sponge on a stick to wash the car with. Without my washy stick my back would suffer much punishment. My camera skils do not do it justice because it's seriously bad ass in person, I can't quite capture it's overwelming badassedness...

I lowered mine on H&R sport springs only. I suffered some decreased ride quality and my front control arm bushings have gone bad since the spring swap. The car has improved ride stability and looks great. I have about 2 fingers width on the front and about 1 and 1/2 on the back. Coils are not on the horizon for me. Cars look good!

I have just installed 20x9 et35 wheels on the car and when fully loaded it can catch on the rear. I noticed that when the suspension is compressed the rear wheel goes back towards the rear of the car rather than going up into the arch vertically like most cars do.

Is there a way of adjusting the geometry so it doesn't tuck that far too the rear as im pretty sure that's where it's catching.
