    2005.5 Audi A4

I'm currently in the market for a newer car. Have been looking around at different cars with AWD and that lead me to Audi with their excellent quattro systems. The car in question is a 2005.5 Audi A4 2.0T quattro. It has the 6 sp gearbox and is completely stock. It is a loaded version though I'm not sure which if any packages it has on it(lighting, sport, premium). Also the car has 90,000 miles of which the owner claims(keyword) most of which are highway miles. He says all the scheduled maintenance has been completed, I asked if him he had documents of it but I haven't heard back from him as of yet. Basically when going to check out the car I'm not really familiar with what to look for. I did find a thread on the cam follower but nothing other than that. It is a Minnesota car for just under $12,000. What you guys think?

this + possibly torn DV since he has the old version + watch for bad coil packs

in rating of how serious/expensive the issues at hand are

    1) timing belt, if snapped with completely render your engine useless

    2) cam follower, very simple preventive procedure, (about 50 $ for a follower and and hr of labor unless your DIY) they are known to wear out and once they where out, you must replace a high pressure fuel pump, and a camshaft....both very costly

    3) DV, known to break the diaphragm when stock as well as chipped (obvi they break more often if you are chipped) again inexpensive fix (about 150 and 1 hr of labor or simple DIY)

    4) coil packs, known on our car to fail, again simple fix, they are reletively cheap and will cause mis fires and loss of performance gains as a result

skip the car all together unless he has docs showing cam follower, timing belt, DV, PCV, have all been swapped out. For a little more you can get a newer audi with less miles. Good luck

So I've heard to just replace the cam follower no matter what, and timing belt to just look for too much slack and cracks, but for the DV, and coil packs how will I be able to judge whether they need replacing...unless of course he provides documents stating they were done. Also it's really slim pickings here in North Dakota for Audis of any year or model(testament to reliability maybe) except for near brand new ones(which I cannot afford), so I've been looking in Minneapolis area found a few promising ones, but it seems all the dealers set outrageous prices above nadaguides.com for almost any Audi. Plus I guess I've been kinda picky, wanting 2.0T with quattro rather then the V6 or the 1.8T. thanks for the help guys

Coils n dv should not be a deal breaker but a good bargaining point to talk the seller down a bit.... Timing belt is also not a deal breaker as audi recommends it changed at 100k so its great if thats done but if not you should use it as another bargaining point.... Can follower tho, should be inspected by a mechanic before purchasing bc that could really screw u over as the car could still run with a hole in the c follower (just run poorly) gl and hope it works out for u

That covers the big stuff. Sludge is another thing that comes to mind, I think some on here have had good luck with seafoam.

After getting to know these cars i would NEVER buy one from someone who is not an enthusiast. There is so many problems that a normal person would never know to tend to.

I would try to get the car for less personally. I wouldn't be to worried about the high miles. I bought a 2005.5 about a year ago with 92K miles on it and it currently has 104K. I replaced the timing belt/and cam follower when i bought it. Since then I have replaced rear sway bar bushings and a bad PCV valve. Its been a great car and a great buy! Just maintain it and you will be fine.

$12k sounds pretty reasonable so don't try and lowball the guy much more. He'll just sell it to someone else that may not be as meticulous. I just bought my 2005.5 2.0t tip quattro with premium/cold package and 17" wheels with 80k miles for $13.5k and the following work was done on it by the seller:

Fuel filter and pressure sensor changed at 65k
    battery 12/2010
HID headlight bulbs changed at 75k
Spark plugs and all filters were changed at 50k.
Fuel pump / follower changed at 70k. (follower Changed every 25k)
    timing belt done 70k
Oil change was done at 75k,80k (firestone GT-1 full synthetic)
Brake fluid done at 50k - needs to be done
    Rear pads done 70k
    Front pads done 1/2011

Car was not perfect and had a lot of scratches in the bumper and one deep scratch on the side. I thought it was a fair price and try to get him down on the scratches but he agreed to a full tank of gas and deliverying the car to my house. My seller is a certified Audi technician so that made me felt confident that he knew about the cam follower issue and changed it religiously.
