Had an exhaust shop weld it on. You'll need to cut the resonator out, so welding is the only solution I think.

Thanks, drob23. I want to use band clamps to hold the x-pipe and make sure it's reversible. Any chance someone could take a pic the x-pipe installed?

Had mine installed today. $175 for parts and labor

    1 day review:
    2013 dsg
    Not any louder at idle.
Hwy from 55-75 in d6 or d7 minimal drone, even with cruise control up hill
Using d for gears 1-5 in city traffic a decent amount of drone, but not unbearable
Using s for gears 1-5 in city traffic less drone, but get loud quickly
Mid throttle where you get the perfect fart sound - it's quite until about 4k and then raaaaaaaaasp fart
    Fart noise is louder
Wot sounds good and hard down shifts sounds great
I've done exhaust mods on a lot of cars and expected some cabin noise or feeling and there is none, all goes out the back and no humm like a 3" down pipe on a turbo car

I have 2 young kids and a wife who take long road trips, I do not see this mod being any issue.
Only issue I can see is when passing a car and don't want to sound like im trying to prove something.

As for exhaust note, it's got a decent growl down low, sounds great mid range but once over 4800 it snaps and rasps a little more than I would prefer.

1 day in, would I pay $175 again? Yes

Will try to get a video next week

Nice summary, more or less exactly my observations, although I'd say there is slightly more drone around 75-80 in either 6/7, especially when you go to pass. But it's not bad at all honestly. The real pleasure comes from rolling down the windows and hearing the roc euro and exhaust sing in harmony! The fart noise is slightly raspier, not terrible but I think it still sounds really cool.

I just had a local custom exhaust shop do this mod for me yesterday and let me just say, this is hands down the best bang for your buck mod you can do on a B8 S4 IMHO. I cannot even describe how intoxicating and exotic the exhaust note is now. I was a bit skeptical at first that for such little money, parts and labor that the exhaust would sound THAT much better than stock or even remotely as good as the popular exhausts on the market (which I'm sure you all know of), but in having heard a couple of those exhausts in person on the S4 and then having heard my car last night after putting in the X-Pipe...Lets just say I'm extremely glad I didn't dish out an additional $1,700+ for one of the aftermarket systems.

Don't get me wrong, the popular aftermarket exhausts that I speak of are Beautiful systems that are well crafted, fit perfectly, add respectable performance (as far as catbacks go) and most of all sound Incredible, but for anyone else who's currently on a budget and seriously looking to transform their S4 into an audible beast that's comparable to that of an R35 GT-R with aftermarket exhaust (in my opinion), you'd be crazy not to spend the $250 Max. it takes to properly have this mod. completed.

I've seen that some/most of you are placing the X-Pipes directly in place of where the Section 2 resonator is being removed and are facing them straight toward the front of the car. I had mine placed a bit more forward than exactly where the resonator sat and have it angled off to the right (probably at a 35-40% angle with straight on being at 0). I'm not sure whether the positioning of the X-Pipe has any audible effect on the exhaust and assume it probably doesn't matter but for those of you wondering what it would sound like if the X-Pipe Weren't straight on, you now know that it sounds simply Amazing with the way I had it done. Also, instead of bringing my shop a pre-manufactured X-Pipe, I had them just custom fab a stainless steel X-Pipe of their own in addition to making their own stainless bends that were then all welded together very nicely. As a result, there is no interior drone whatsoever, Very little rasp (if any, is only under WOT) and is totally quiet at idle. I can now make the car just as loud as one with a fully aftermarket exhaust in and around town or keep it as quiet as stock on the highway or in just cruising above 2,500 rpm in the higher gears.

When I hopefully find the time to make a video for you all to see/hear what my car is now like, I'll post it on here and likely help a lot of you pull the trigger on getting this done.

    Best $250 I've spent

So far I have $600 into my car and I have an intake, exhaust, and springs.

For anyone under 35 don't worry about this being loud, it's definitely louder down low and sounds great at wot. I see this mod costing me more money in gas than the actual mod cost lol

Got Mines done this morning, best way to say it, the exhaust is 15% louder under "normal" driving condition and a good 35% louder under wot. it sounds almost like an Infiniti G37 now, dunno if thats a good thing or a bad thing, lol. I would say do this mod if you want a nice "pronounced" exhaust sound, do not do this mod if you are expecting the car to be the same "Audi" that you bought from the dealership, its definitely loud under wot, but not an annoying type of loud, but definitely not as stealth as this car use to be.

I first did a muffler delete and straight pipes to new tips, great sound, but a horrible drone... found this thread and decided to go this route... So I had mine done today, good sound, not as good as the muffler delete with straight pipes, but NO DRONE and a really good sound... They did mine including the Xpipe and welding my mufflers back on for 100.00 and that is just amazing for this mod...

Finally had this done, love the mod. Slight drone at 2700k rpm, but otherwise very happy. The shop that did the work charged me for 5 hours of labor, just curious what you guys ended up paying?

5 hrs? Are you @#!)@!# kidding me? Even at an extremely modest rate that likes $300. Did they at least tig weld it like the above poster mentioned? I paid $100 for the install and thought that was a lot compared to some others in this thread.

Oh well, as long as you're happy it's still a lot cheaper than getting a full catback aftermarket exhaust.

Got the 2.25" Magnaflow X-pipe from Amazon for $100 (including tax), and install for $80 (San Jose, most places were charging $120-$200). Note, this is not an S4, but S5 3.0T, but wanted to share here cause this is the main X-pipe thread I've been following. Sorry, no video yet but will try to get it this weekend. So far, I wouldn't say there is no drone. There is more cabin noise only at about 2k-2.5k RPMs, but not bad. I've only driven it 10 miles to work with the windows up, so I need to drive more.

    Nice, $80 install!

I'm hoping to get mine done next week. Trying to find a place that will just fab the xpipe for me. May just go the magnaflow route though if I can't find something.

Yea, that's Chris's S5, but that is X-Pipe on APR exhaust system, not stock. I think also Stasis Stage 1 tune. Definitely sounds sweet.

So I just ordered the Tru-X pipe and will have it installed. Since I'm going this route, I'm thinking of changing my stock tips as well. Any ideas on length, width etc that I need for the tips? Awe's 102mm tips look nice, so that looks like the width I'm going to try for, but what about inlet and/or length?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

No matter what you're going to have to weld it on, I might be wrong but I think stock is 2.25. Anything that or above should work. I think!

You have to be careful because the exhaust tips are only so far apart, unless they can make a small angled elbow?

I talked to AWE about ordering the 102mm tips and they told me they do not sell the tips separately. Only comes with the exhaust system.

Try Solo Performance for the exhaust tips.

What do you guys think about the xpipe placement for the raspyness?

Xpipe on the straight section behind the front resonators, and then straight pipe through the bend where the resonator is cut out?

    Or

Xpipe on the bend where the resonator is cut out, with extra straight piping before/after where need to connect it to everything?

I have a local shop that is going to make their own xpipe (this alone I think should maybe slightly help sound/raspy) and do the straight piping where needed for about $250, just trying to figure out the best route before I go through with it.

    Thanks!

My vote: The sweet spot. Which is to say, the exhaust setup you've seen/heard in person. Otherwise you're wasting your time trying to discern the sound quality of a youtube video (mine included). Fire me a message and I'd be pleased to put you through her paces in the interest of your auditory approval.

Hard to say without hearing both in person. I did mine where the center resonator is and it's pretty raspy on WOT high in the rev range (dsg fart sound is also raspy). But it's hard to say whether moving it between these two spots is the issue, or if rasp can differ by being a couple cm forward or back from wherever you put it (i.e. very sensitive to exact placement).

Either way, I think this mod is certainly a trade-off (unlike a complete aftermarket exhaust)...some rasp in exchange for *a lot* more noise than stock, drone isn't too bad, very cheap at ~$200.

QUESTION... Would doing this exhaust Mod in anyway interfere with Warranty?
Would dealer TD1 car in their system like what I have read happens to cars that have upgraded their engine management software?
