    Removing ABS Control Module

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my ABS light/Brake light started flashing this weekend, along with the annoying beeps. I'm at 110k, so I'm assuming ABS module is going/gone. I'm planning on going with either http://www.cheap-abs.com/index.html or http://www.modulemaster.com/en/services/abs.php.

My question; can the module be removed directly from the engine bay, or do I have to go via the fender lining?

    Thanks

You can remove it from the engine bay. The lower screws can be a little difficult to get at, but it can be done if you have a short enough torx bit and don't have big sausage fingers. Also, for anyone else wondering, you don't have to remove the whole ABS unit, just the plastic module that is screwed to the side of it with 6 torx screws. You can drive the car without the module in place too, just be sure to wrap the exposed unit with a plastic bag or something to keep dust out.

Also, shoot "k0mpressd" a PM, he fixed the ABS module fin my Passat or me for a great price and he's fast too.

Speedo is erratic, but still functional. Is is related to ABS? Thought it was speed sensor.

I did nothing till I had a replacement unit. For me it only effected my ABS not working. Only thing I noticed was I had to pump the brakes like I did back in the day when it was snowy/ icy.

You can buy a new unit from ECS.

I'm told that if your hands are nimble enough, and the torx20 it small enough, you can remove directly from the engine bay. Has anyone done this succesfully?

Why spend upwards of $400 for a replacement, when you can have our exisiting one refurbished for less than half that. Just curious?

Just throwing other options out there. I had great luck with my LCD rebuild from Module-masters. I replaced mine 4.5 years ago when rebuilding was almost the same cost as a new unit.

This is true, and what I suggested earlier.

Also, buying a new unit is kind of a waste of money since the new units will eventually have the same problem as the old ones. You're better off just getting your original ABS module repaired so you never have to worry about it again.

I went with Module Masters 2 years ago and no problems to date. They also repaired my LCD, extremely happy with them...

Don't kill youself trying to get it out from the bay, it's pretty easy to take off a wheel, wheel liner, move that washer bottle and have at those bolts.

I really need to stop being lazy and do this. I've gotten to the point where I don't even hear the beeps for the ABS anymore and the LCD screen I've just turned off now lol. I'll be using Module Masters when I go to have each fixed.

    Removing the driver side wheel

I do not have access to a torque wrench, and am wondering how I should best go about tightening the lugs once the module has been removed. Is there a general rule of thumb when tightening the wheel lugs manually? I want to make sure that the wheel is secure (but not over tightened).

    Anyone?
