    B7 Passat Roof Rack fits a B5 A4!

So I did some searching and hadn't seen anyone mention this so I thought I'd post up. I might be in new teritory here?

After following this DIY the roof rack never fit quite right. Granted, this was for a B6 I thought it ought to be close enough to the same. Well it was close, very close, but not quite close enough.

After work a couple days ago I got to tinkering. After taking the feet apart on the roof rack I noticed there was a lip on top of the adjuster plate. I simply shaved that lip down with a grinder and it gave me that extra ~8th of an inch I needed to have the bar mount properly. Since these racks are in the 100 buck range, I thought I'd post up. In the third picture you'll notice the end cap isn't flush - that is just a plastic cap that I need to trim. The bars sit perfectly.

Sorry, no pics of the grinding process but one you take the feet apart you'll see what I'm talking about clear as day. Not a bad price or finished product for 100 bucks and a couple of hours R&D!!

Thanks for the love. I wish I could have stripped everything off my old B5 so I wasn't 4x4 with this one! I'm also missing my S4 side skirts and heated seats this time of year... Ah well, it is nice having 100k less miles on the car!

Is it true that the roof lines are different on the pre facelift and these Passat racks will not fit?

I just received the Yakima Fatcat rack but would rather have these base bars.

Does anyone know if B6 roof racks fit the B5, or what modifications are needed to make it work?

With small modification. Its the same mod as the b7 I would imagine. They talk about it on the vwvortex forum and I think there is a link in there with a DIY a few pages back if I remember correctly.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I meant fitting a B6 A4 roof rack on a B5 A4 (OEM B6 A4 bars). Does it need modifying? Has anobody
    done it? Thanks.

One of our guys has one of the modified racks for his B5 but had problems getting it to fit right. I'll forward this thread on to him - thanks!

Additionally, we have just a handful of the B6 Passat racks still available right here. These are NLA so once they're gone, they're gone.

I don't think that is true, this fits my totaled 96 as well.

Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life but I bought this rack on ebay for my b5 and shortened it to fit properly, but it still doesn't mount up the way it should. Just to clarify, did you grind the fins that actually fit into the door frames, or did you grind down the inside of the mounting bracket above the tightening screw?

So this WILL work on a pre-facelift b5?
