I must vent!!!! Royal purple content

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I decided it was time to change some oil...engine oil transmission oil and the rear diff also. I got some royal purple 75w90 for the trans and rear diff. oh BTW.. car is a 5spd 1.8t W/72K. I drained both the trans and rear diff at the same time and filled them back up respectively. 2.9 quarts in the trans and 1.5 in the rear diff. I let the car warm up for about 40mins. Now when I got in I immediately noticed the HORRIBLE difference. I literally had to fight the gear to go in. I was so disappointed, this crap is like 20 bucks a bottle. I thought that maybe I will have to drive it a bit so it can work itself into the the trans.... yea, I was wrong ... I went to drive the car this morning and it was even worse. The car sleeps in a heated garage so it's not like it sat out in the cold. I am disgusted in Royal Purple and would highly recommend NOT using this crap... I do not feel better about venting , but I hope that I can avoid some of you from making the same mistake.

One of my neighbors down the street SWEARS by AMSOIL. Been using it for years. He has tried it on his N/A, Single turbo, Twin Turbo engines, and he says he gets the same results across the boards.. Always a positive experience.

Amsoil is good shit. I haven't tried any of their automotive products but I've used their motorcycle products for many years. Their 2 stroke oil is 2nd to none.

Although the RP is a little watery in viscosity, I dont think that it would reject the gear changes. When my fluid gets low (axle seal leak) thats what I experience, make sure that you indeed put the correct amount.

you're fighting the tranny b/c RP is GL-5 approved which is NOT safe for yellow metals, which our synchros are brass.. Get some Synchromesh in it. My mk3's tranny use to shift HORRIBLE and i thought the trans was going out.. swapped gear oils and it shifts like butter.

At 130K (mostly Interstate) miles I am past due for a transmission gear oil change. I have had no complaints with the OEM gear oil so I will probably just stick with OEM. I realize that the cost is considerably more but considering I got 7 trouble free years out of the OEM stuff I am not inclined to change.

    ^This.

The RP is GL-4/GL-5 compliant. You want GL-4 ONLY for your trans(Redline MT90 is a good GL-4 fluid), and GL-5 ONLY for the rear diff(Motul 300 GL-5 is a good choice)..

Also, the Royal Purple IS good fluid, when used in the right application...

The redline fluid is also very good. Been running it in my diff and tranny with track time qand last time we checked it it still looked good. Shifts well. I also run the redline in the motor since the build.

I've used Amsoil with great results. Was gonna try some Royal Purple but another mechanic told me of the horrible results he had on his race car. That was enough to scare me away...

OG.....do you ever experience the "hard to shift into 2nd gear" syndrome at times when the tranny oil is cold? It's been 50K or so (my memory may be foggy on this) when I switched, but when I switched to Motul Gear 300 the frequency of my hard shifts went way down. I still experience it occasionally, but I don't have to double clutch as before, I just baby it in real slow-n-easy.

OP.....can't comment on the other flavors of tranny/diff oil, but I've been happier with the Motul 300 over what came in the transaxle from the factory.

I vote Redline. My old BMW would hardly go into gear - some Redline MT90 in the gearbox and it was shifting like new, even after 200k miles.

    Right here:

i love NEO Synthetics, but have yet to use it on my Audi. on my corolla 2 way diff that oil stays clean and crisp longer than any other oil i have ever used in my life. and can allow for crazy LSD clutch disk lock up for mucho drift action.

Dude... I’m sorry that happened to you but it saved me from buying this stuff for my b7 s4. It’s Saturday and dealership is closed and from all appearances this hear oil checked all the boxes. I’d be filling my baby up with it right now had I not seen this. Best of luck brother

OEM,synchromess or redline. I wouldnt recommend anything else. Just because its expensive AF doesnt mean its good. Best to stick to the tried and true fluids.
