The cabin filter when facing your car (standing in front of your front bumper) is under the hood directly below the windshield where it meets the wipers and directly in front of the passenger seat. There is a plastic cover over it which I believe is fitted with clips only iirc. It's easy to change out, definitely a DIY for anyone imo.

    1. Open Hood
    2. Remove the plastic cowl cover, where the battery would go on an S4. walk to the passenger side of the car and look right by the windshield. You will see a black plastic box with two tabs. Lift off the cover and whalaa, there is the filter.

It's the box with the diamond cut recession.

Probably the easiest, effective method way for at home is going to be...
    1. Remove existing dust and pollen filter, leave covers off
    2. Let engine get to operating temp
    3. Turn climate controls to Hi (full heat), max blower speed, Econ, select all vents (upper, mid, lower), don't turn on recirculation
    4. Roll windows up, shut doors
    5. Spray a good amount of Ozium (Pep Boys carries this product) underneath the hood directly into where you dust and pollen filter went (you should see the blower fan spinning).
    6. Hold your breath, open a door real quick and push recirculate, close door - do NOT stay in the car.
    7. Let car run for 10 minutes (without you in it).
    8. Roll all windows down and let remaining ozium fumes air out while car is still running with blower full on etc. Turn off car afer ten minutes, leave all windows down etc for at least an hr.
    9. Install new dust and pollen filter after you turn the car off

That should kill all the mold on the evaporator and in the ducts, and protect against it forming again.

I believe the charcoal version does a better job of filtering the minute particles. Just my opinion.

I switched to a charcoal filter and the main difference I can report is that if someone smokes in the car in front of me I can no longer smell the cigarette smoke, but something like diesel from trucks or semi’s still gets by

It has cut down on some outside odors permeating through the vents, forgot about that factor.

I just read this thread a few days ago......noticing my car smells a little funky at times so I ordered a charcoal filter from genuinevwaudiparts

Super easy to replace the filter in just minutes and voila......funkiness gone

    Thanks for the thread guys

I can't take credit, Handyvorb provided me with the 'how to' a long time ago. I saved his info (added some minor tweaks) and shared it here.
