That's from the PP description, which leads me to believe that what I have is a scaled down MMI without the NAV/Hard Drive/DVD unit or camera. I know there's threads from people who did it aftermarket with non-OEM stuff, but I was just wondering if Audi themselves can do it for a fee.
Thanks for your responses, btw. :)
No, you cannot retrofit MMI with nav on a B8 A4. Non-nav is not stripped down MMI, it is not MMI at all. It looks similar to MMI, but it is not.
Non nav is like a fancy regular radio. The controls are on the dash (the console is blank) and the screen is in the same location as on MMI. The interface of the radio is made to look similar to MMI.
MMI cars have all radio/nav equipment stored in the trunk. It is linked to the rest of the car with fiber optic cable. The screen is a bit larger, and the controls are on the console.
This is the reason why retrofitting nav is not an option. You would have to pay the (ridiculously high) prices for all the (multiple) MMI components. You would also have to rewire a lot of your car to change it over to the MOST system that MMI uses. Parts alone would probably be close to $8000.
Of course it is possible, but the expensive and difficultly level of the install make it easier to just buy a car with nav.
Congrats on your new car! It sounds great, enjoy it!
